Truth Travels: Buck Jacobs’ “Worship in the Trenches” Still Shaping Christian Business Ethics
More than a decade after C12 founder Buck Jacobs wrote his landmark case studies on obedience and business ethics, his work is now being taught to master’s students — a reminder that what leaders pour into others can keep working long after they leave the room.
This is what lasting impact looks like. Buck Jacobs, founder of C12, has helped blaze the trail for Christian business leadership for decades. In 2013, he wrote Worship in the Trenches: Cases of Christian Business Ethics — challenging business leaders to wrestle with what obedience looks like when faith collides with a real business decision.
In August 2022, Buck spoke to the Central Florida Christian Chamber community, before the launch of the U.S. Christian Chamber of Commerce, pouring into Christian business owners and the Christian Chamber movement taking shape. And today, his work is being shared with master’s students at USCCC member Concordia University, Nebraska, equipping another generation to think deeply about faith, ethics, and leadership in the marketplace.
Obedience Under Pressure: Three Case Studies
Jacobs’ 2013 paper approaches business ethics from the conviction that the only durable basis for ethics is a Christ-centered worldview. Citing Dostoevsky’s warning that “without God anything is permissible,” Jacobs presents three real-world cases — anonymized but drawn from actual business dilemmas — of leaders wrestling with obedience when it carried real cost.
The Gamble
Tom, a respected Christian business owner facing tightening bank covenants, considered reporting a customer’s order a month early to turn a looming loss into a profit on paper. He went ahead with it — and the customer later cancelled the order. Forced to correct his statements, Tom’s bank called the loan, and he lost the business in bankruptcy.
The Tainted Property
George, an agribusiness owner and church elder, faced an EPA disclosure question on a loan application tied to an unreported fuel spill he had already remediated. Rather than risk the omission, he confessed directly to the EPA. The spill site passed inspection, the loan was approved, and his business continued to grow.
The Favor
Four newly converted partners in a chemicals business wrestled with quietly purchasing liquor across state lines as a favor for managers at their largest customer. They chose instead to tell the plant manager directly and share their faith. The customer kept the business on merit alone — and later, after the partners prayed for the manager’s paralyzed son and he recovered, the boy’s painted tribute became the inspiration for the company’s new “A Christian Company” logo.
“Do We Ever Truly Lose When We Obey God?”
Jacobs closes the paper with a question he returns to throughout: do we ever truly lose when we obey God? Drawing on Hebrews 11:6 — “without faith it is impossible to please Him” — and 1 Samuel 15:22, “to obey is better than sacrifice,” Jacobs frames obedience as an act of faith that always carries risk, but never carries true loss.
Faith means stepping out onto or into uncertainty. Obedience in faith pleases God. Buck Jacobs, Worship in the Trenches

Because Faith at Work Isn’t Just What We Say
Because faith at work isn’t just what we say. It’s how we lead, how we decide, and what we do when doing the right thing costs us something. USCCC extended its thanks to Jacobs for believing in this mission, investing in Christian business leaders, and blazing a trail that the next generation is still walking today — building on the foundation leaders like him helped establish.

What a night on Florida’s Sunrise Coast!
The Sunrise Coast Christian Chamber of Commerce officially launched last night to a full house — and reached an incredible milestone that very night: 50 Founding Members. Founder and President Nancy Farrington, MA DTM, and her leadership team have been building toward this moment with prayer, vision, persistence, and a heart to create a thriving Christian business community on Florida’s east coast. And last night, that vision came to life. The room was filled with energy, connection, faith, and expectation.
Walter Bond and Antoinette Bond brought a powerful message, joined by Krystal Parker, MBA, President & Founder of the US Christian Chamber of Commerce, and Bob Dudley, Chairman of the Central Florida Christian Chamber of Commerce Board. Brian Lucas from the Good Books Company was in attendance with many other friends and community.
The occasion was marked with something especially meaningful. For the first time, USCCC presented its new Proclamation of Welcome, formally recognizing the Sunrise Coast Christian Chamber of Commerce as Christian Chamber Coalition Charter No. 033.
Christian Chamber Coalition — Charter No. 033The proclamation was read before the community, presented to Nancy and her leadership, and followed by prayer over the Chamber and the work ahead by West Melbourne City Council representative, Helen Voltz.
This is more than the launch of another organization. It is another Christian business community putting down roots and saying yes to bringing biblical truth, prayer, relationship, and marketplace leadership together. And hitting 50 Founding Members on launch night, Sunrise Coast is officially launched — and already building momentum.
Advance the Kingdom. Strengthen Christian Business. Transform Communities. U.S. Christian Chamber of Commerce
Congratulations to Nancy, the Board, the 50 Founding Members, and the entire Sunrise Coast Christian Chamber community. Welcome to the Coalition, Charter No. 033!
