Somaliland’s Abrahamic Movement takes shape as founder outlines vision for interfaith unity

Mohamed Abdi, sole founder of the newly established Abrahamic Movement Somaliland, has formally briefed the organisation’s board of directors, setting out a governance framework built on dialogue, accountability and the shared ethical values of the Abrahamic traditions.

A new interfaith institution has entered Somaliland’s civic landscape. The Abrahamic Movement Somaliland (AMSL) has been formally established under the leadership of Mohamed Abdi, who holds the position of Sole Founder, and who this week issued an official statement to the organisation’s board of directors setting out the movement’s origins, its governing structure and the responsibilities now shared between its founder and its board.

According to the statement, AMSL was conceived on the belief that Somaliland can play a constructive role in advancing peace, mutual understanding and interfaith dialogue, alongside good governance, youth empowerment, sustainable development, economic cooperation and international friendship, all grounded in the shared ethical values of the Abrahamic traditions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

A vision rooted in dialogue

As Sole Founder, Mohamed Abdi is credited with initiating the concept behind AMSL, developing its organisational vision and drafting its foundational governance framework. He also coordinated the movement’s registration process and personally invited a group of qualified individuals to serve on its board of directors, tasked with providing collective leadership, strategic oversight and institutional accountability going forward.

The statement is explicit on one point of internal structure: the board did not found the organisation. Rather, it now serves as AMSL’s highest governing body, responsible for guiding, supervising and safeguarding the movement’s mission, values and long-term sustainability, while the founder remains what the statement calls “the guardian of the founding vision.”

Defining the founder’s role

The statement lays out, point by point, what the role of Sole Founder entails within AMSL: establishing the organisation’s original vision and mission, defining its core principles and strategic direction, initiating the legal registration process, developing the initial constitution and governance framework, appointing the inaugural board of directors in line with that constitution, promoting partnerships at local, regional and international levels, and protecting the founding values and institutional identity of the movement.

The board’s mandate

In parallel, the newly appointed board of directors has been entrusted with a distinct but complementary set of duties, according to the statement: providing strategic leadership, approving policies and organisational plans, ensuring transparency and accountability, overseeing financial management and compliance, supporting resource mobilisation, monitoring organisational performance, and promoting ethical leadership while protecting the reputation and integrity of AMSL.

Board members, the statement stresses, are expected to act collectively in the best interests of the organisation rather than in pursuit of personal interests, a distinction the founder frames as central to AMSL’s long-term credibility.

A shared commitment

The statement closes its structural section with an appeal to collective responsibility, noting that AMSL’s success depends on cooperation between the founder, the board of directors, management, volunteers, partners and stakeholders alike. Every decision taken in the organisation’s name, it says, should reflect a commitment to peace, justice, human dignity, religious respect, good governance, accountability, integrity and service to society.
