“I Will Never Get Over October 7.”
Three years after the October 7 massacre, Lebanese activist Jowelle Michel Howayeck draws an unbreakable line from the horror of that morning to the Damour massacre and Lebanon’s own decades of pain — and delivers a sovereign declaration: Lebanon’s cause is Lebanon, and Lebanon alone.
I will never get over October 7. It reminds me of the Damour massacre and the pain Lebanon has carried for decades.
Three years later, the images still haunt me. Young people slaughtered while dancing at a music festival. Families massacred inside their own homes. Children, parents, and grandparents murdered or dragged away as hostages. Ordinary people subjected to unimaginable horror for no reason other than being Israeli.
What breaks my heart is that three years later, people still question what happened, minimize it, justify it, rewrite it, or dismiss it as “propaganda.”
And as a Lebanese, I cannot forget history either. Lebanon, Jordan, and Kuwait all welcomed Palestinians — with painful consequences that none of these countries will ever forget.
Yet Palestine has become one of the world’s loudest political causes, amplified by an extraordinary propaganda machine, endless paid demonstrations, slogans, and campaigns.
I refuse selective memory.
I remember October 7 and the innocent souls whose only reality that morning was that they were born Israeli.
And I remember Lebanon.
We have already sacrificed enough of our people, our sovereignty, and our future for causes that were never ours. I will not be pressured, shamed, or emotionally blackmailed into adopting Palestine as my cause.
Lebanese lives are not collateral for somebody else’s liberation. Lebanese sovereignty is not negotiable.
I remember October 7.
I remember what Lebanon paid.
My cause is and will always be Lebanon.
