
Tel Aviv University Launches One of the World’s First Deep-Tech MBAs as Science Reshapes Israel’s Startup Nation
A new two-year program at the Coller School of Management is training scientists and engineers to lead companies built on discoveries that can take years, not months, to reach the market.
For most of the past two decades, Israel earned its reputation as the “Startup Nation” through companies built to move fast — light on infrastructure, quick to scale, quick to sell. That pattern is now changing. A growing share of new Israeli companies are coming out of university laboratories and research institutes, built around scientific advances that can take years, not months, to become products.
The shift is already reshaping how the country backs its youngest companies. In June, the Israel Innovation Authority introduced its Start-Up Fund, a pool of support aimed squarely at early-stage “deep-tech” ventures — the kind of healthcare, energy, computing, agriculture, and manufacturing projects that cannot be built and shipped on a start-up’s usual timeline.
Money, though, has never been the whole story. Deep-tech founders have to work through patents, technical proof, manufacturing logistics, and a path to commercial sale long before a single product exists. That takes a different kind of leader — one able to make hard business calls about a technology that might look nothing like itself in six months’ time.
A Classroom Built for the Lab
That gap is now producing a response from academia. The Coller School of Management at Tel Aviv University has opened a Global MBA in Deep Tech, among the first programs anywhere designed specifically for entrepreneurs working at the seam between research and business. Its first cohort began in January 2026, drawing engineers, scientists, and physicians from multiple countries.
The two-year program is built around a simple reality of deep-tech companies: research, fundraising, product development, manufacturing, and business strategy rarely happen in sequence. They happen together, often blurring the line between building the technology and building the company around it. Coursework is designed to sit inside that overlap, pairing standard MBA fundamentals with the specific problems of bringing complicated science into the real world.
Yael Steinhart, dean of the Coller School of Management, says Israel’s rise as the Startup Nation was driven by people who spotted commercial promise in new technology early — and that this program is meant to raise “the next generation of leaders who can think beyond the laboratory.”
Learning Where the Science Actually Happens
Founders in research-heavy fields often have to make consequential decisions long before the commercial picture is clear, which is part of why the program leans away from the lecture hall. Students work directly inside Israel’s deep-tech ecosystem — through workshops, mentorship, and live commercialization projects — sitting across the table from the business leaders, researchers, and investors who already navigate this terrain daily. Based on Tel Aviv University’s campus, the program also puts participants close to engineering, computer science, and life-sciences researchers, making cross-disciplinary work a normal part of the experience rather than an add-on.
As more companies trace their origins to a laboratory bench rather than a Tel Aviv coffee shop, the harder problem is no longer producing scientific breakthroughs — it is producing founders who know how to carry those breakthroughs into a viable, scalable business. Which discoveries stay confined to academic journals, and which go on to reshape entire industries, may increasingly come down to that combination of scientific depth and commercial judgment.
