Netanyahu to Lebanese People: “Israel Is Not at War With You — Our Fight Is With Hezbollah”
Israeli PM delivers direct video message urging Lebanese to reclaim their future and build peace and prosperity once the Iran-backed group is dismantled.
In a powerful direct address to the people of Lebanon, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that Israel’s war is with Hezbollah alone — not with Lebanon or its citizens — and called on the Lebanese to seize the moment, dismantle the Iranian proxy’s grip on their country, and join Israel in building a future of safety, investment, and shared prosperity.
The video message, released on Wednesday, comes at a pivotal time amid fragile ceasefire efforts and broader regional diplomacy aimed at reducing Iranian influence across the Middle East.
A Clear Distinction and a Vision of Hope
Netanyahu opened with a direct appeal:
“I have a message for you, the people of Lebanon. Israel is not at war with you. We’re at war with Hezbollah, that has taken your country hostage, that does Iran’s bidding, that uses your territory to launch terrorist attacks against Israel.” Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel
He emphasized that Hezbollah’s actions have held Lebanon back for years, turning the country into a launchpad for attacks while enriching its leaders at the expense of ordinary Lebanese citizens.
“Once Hezbollah is dismantled, the possibilities are endless. Israel wants peace with you. Seize your future. Join Israel. Build safety and prosperity for all of our children.” Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel
Netanyahu added that Israelis yearn for genuine peace with Lebanon — a peace where the two peoples can invest together, build together, and thrive together.
The message strikes an optimistic and forward-looking tone, framing the defeat of Hezbollah not merely as a security necessity for Israel but as a liberation and opportunity for the Lebanese people themselves.
Context: Hezbollah’s Hostage-Taking of Lebanon
Hezbollah, Iran’s most powerful proxy, has dominated Lebanese politics and security for years, embedding itself in the state while maintaining an independent armed wing. Since the escalation following October 2023, Hezbollah has repeatedly used southern Lebanon to fire rockets and conduct cross-border attacks on Israeli communities, forcing tens of thousands of Israelis from their homes and drawing heavy Israeli responses.
The group’s actions have come at enormous cost to Lebanon: widespread destruction in the south, economic collapse, and the erosion of Lebanese sovereignty as decisions about war and peace are effectively made in Tehran rather than Beirut.
Recent weeks have seen tentative steps toward de-escalation, including a conditional ceasefire framework. Netanyahu’s message reinforces Israel’s position that any lasting calm requires Hezbollah’s military infrastructure to be dismantled and its ability to threaten Israel from Lebanese soil to be permanently ended.
Reactions and the Path Forward
The message has resonated with many Lebanese who have long opposed Hezbollah’s stranglehold on the country. Christian communities, opposition politicians, and ordinary citizens exhausted by economic ruin and foreign-imposed conflict have increasingly called for the group’s disarmament and for Lebanon to reclaim its independence and rejoin the community of prosperous, peaceful nations.
Lebanese voices critical of Hezbollah have welcomed the clear distinction between the terror organization and the Lebanese people and state. They see in Netanyahu’s words not only a security message but an invitation to a different future — one in which Lebanon is no longer a battlefield for Iran’s regional ambitions but a partner in regional stability and economic growth.
This appeal aligns with the broader vision of expanding the Abraham Accords model of normalization and cooperation across the region. With U.S.-led diplomatic efforts advancing on multiple fronts, including recent progress in talks involving Iran, the weakening of Hezbollah’s capabilities opens a historic window for Lebanon to chart a sovereign, prosperous course.
A Moment of Choice for Lebanon
Prime Minister Netanyahu’s message is both a warning and an invitation. It warns that Israel will continue to act decisively against any threat emanating from Lebanese territory. At the same time, it extends a hand to the Lebanese people: once the Iranian proxy is removed from the equation, the door to peace, investment, tourism, and shared prosperity stands wide open.
For a country that has suffered decades of conflict, economic despair, and external interference, the choice Netanyahu laid out is stark but hopeful: remain hostage to Hezbollah and Iran, or seize the future and build safety and prosperity alongside neighbors who want peace.
As regional diplomacy continues and pressure on Iranian proxies mounts, Netanyahu’s direct appeal to the Lebanese people may prove to be one of the clearest articulations yet of what peace could look like — not just the absence of war, but the presence of genuine partnership and opportunity for both nations.
Many in Lebanon and across the region will be watching to see whether the Lebanese people can now grasp that future.
