Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Allison M. Hooker hosted Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Elnur Mammadov and Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Vahan Kostanyan at the State Department this week, marking the anniversary of the peace deal President Trump brokered between Armenia and Azerbaijan on August 8, 2025.

In a post on X, Hooker said she was honored to host both officials and looked forward to continuing the work of securing “a peaceful and prosperous future for the South Caucasus while strengthening America’s strategic position in this critical region.”

A Year Since the Washington-Brokered Deal

The August 8, 2025 peace agreement, brokered with US involvement, was aimed at formally ending decades of conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, including disputes over the Nagorno-Karabakh region that had periodically erupted into war since the collapse of the Soviet Union. The anniversary meeting in Washington signals continued US engagement in consolidating that peace and maintaining diplomatic ties with both governments.

Hooker’s remarks framed the ongoing effort in the South Caucasus as both a regional stability priority and a matter of American strategic interest, pointing to continued coordination with Baku and Yerevan as the peace process moves forward.
