Trump: Ceasefire on ‘Massive Life Support’ After Iran’s Counter-Proposal Rejected as ‘A Piece of Garbage’
In his sharpest comments since the conflict began, President Trump declared Iran’s latest diplomatic response “Totally Unacceptable,” described the ceasefire as critically fragile, and warned that the United States has “the best plan ever” to end the war — which may involve “something much worse” for Tehran.
The Iran ceasefire is now, in President Trump’s own words, on “massive life support.” After reviewing Iran’s counter-proposal to the latest U.S. peace plan, Trump delivered his harshest public assessment of the diplomatic process since Operation Epic Fury began on February 28, describing the offer as “a piece of garbage” and accusing Tehran of “playing games with the United States, and the rest of the World.”
I have just read the response from Iran’s so-called ‘Representatives.’ I don’t like it — TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE! Iran has been playing games with the United States, and the rest of the World. The ceasefire is on massive life support.
The comments came via Truth Social late Sunday and were amplified in person when Trump addressed reporters in the Oval Office during a maternal health event on Monday — pivoting sharply to the Iran situation without prompting, signaling the depth of his frustration.
The Iranian counter-proposal was delivered through Pakistani mediators in response to a reported U.S. 14-point ceasefire and peace framework. While Iran’s Foreign Ministry maintained its response was not “excessive,” Trump and the White House viewed it as falling far short on core U.S. demands: full dismantling of uranium enrichment capabilities, concessions on regional proxy networks, and permanent reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
“Iran has been defeated militarily. I have the best plan ever to end this war. Maybe — or maybe something much worse.”
Trump’s Oval Office remarks carried deliberate ambiguity that markets and analysts treated as a signal of potential resumed military action. His phrase “maybe something much worse” — positioned immediately after referencing his “best plan ever” — aligns with his pattern throughout the conflict: offering a deal while making the cost of refusal explicit and visceral.
“Iran would face pain without a deal soon. The U.S. holds leverage due to Iran’s military setbacks. Their leadership’s discord is costing them time they don’t have.”— President Trump, paraphrased from Oval Office remarks · May 11, 2026
