For ancient peoples, an earthquake was never merely a natural phenomenon. It was a cosmic event that shook the earth, religion, and politics all at once. Because it could not be predicted, it became fused in the ancient mind with divine wrath, with warning, and with the beginning or end of an era.

Gods of the Shaking Earth

In Mesopotamia, the Sumerians, Babylonians, and Assyrians interpreted earthquakes as the wrath of Enlil, god of air and storms. The Epic of Gilgamesh records tremors as signs of divine anger, and if the earth shook during a king’s coronation, priests demanded additional offerings — earthquakes were recorded in astronomical texts alongside eclipses.

Ancient Egypt

Egyptians believed the earth was held stable by Geb, god of the earth, with Shu, god of air, separating it from the sky. Any tremor signified a disruption of that balance and the wrath of Set, god of chaos — a belief that led temple builders to lay massive foundations designed to withstand shaking.

Ancient Greece

The Greeks offered history’s first quasi-scientific explanations. Homer linked earthquakes to Poseidon, “shaker of the earth.” Aristotle theorized trapped underground winds seeking an outlet. Thales proposed that the earth floats on water, and that shaking water caused the ground to move.

Rome

The Romans inherited Neptune from Greek tradition. Pliny the Elder, in his Natural History, recorded numerous earthquakes and linked them to solar eclipses and shifting weather patterns.

China’s Bronze Seismograph

Among ancient civilizations, China’s response was the most technically advanced. During the Han Dynasty in 132 CE, the scholar Zhang Heng invented what is considered the first seismoscope: a bronze vessel from which a ball would drop from a dragon’s mouth in the direction of a distant tremor. Chinese tradition linked earthquakes to an emperor’s “loss of the Mandate of Heaven” — after a major quake, the emperor was expected to fast and publicly repent.

The Americas: Gods of Earth and Stone

Across the Americas, the Maya and Aztec regarded earthquakes as the movement of the earth god Tepictoton and offered sacrifices to appease him. The Inca, meanwhile, built cities such as Machu Picchu from interlocking stones laid without mortar — a construction technique specifically designed to withstand tremors, which they attributed to the wrath of Pachamama, goddess of the earth.

Earthquakes in the Abrahamic Tradition

Across the Abrahamic faiths, earthquakes appear within a moral and eschatological framework rather than a purely mythological one — tied not to a pantheon of competing gods, but to the will of a single God and the moral order of creation.

Quakes That Rewrote History

Several earthquakes did more than kill and destroy — they altered the map of the ancient world. The earthquake at Helike, Greece, in 373 BCE, was followed by a tsunami that swallowed the wealthy coastal city in a single night; the Greeks attributed it to Poseidon’s punishment and called the lost city “the Atlantis of Greece.” Its underwater ruins were finally located in 2001.

In 226 BCE, the Rhodes earthquake toppled the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World — the shattered bronze statue lay in ruins for roughly 800 years, and the quake permanently altered the city’s harbor.

The Antioch earthquake of 115 CE struck while Emperor Trajan himself was in the city; more than 260,000 people are said to have died, and Trajan reportedly escaped by leaping from a window before the Romans rebuilt the city. Four centuries later, the Great Antioch Earthquake of 526 CE — among the deadliest of the ancient world, striking during Ascension celebrations — killed an estimated 250,000 to 300,000 people. Emperor Justinian rebuilt the ruined city and renamed it Theopolis, “City of God.”

An earthquake in 62 CE cracked the walls of Pompeii in southern Italy; seventeen years later, the eruption of Vesuvius, accompanied by further tremors, buried Pompeii and Herculaneum under ash — destruction that paradoxically preserved the cities almost exactly as they stood, down to bread left in ovens.

Even Judea’s history bears the mark of seismic disaster: an earthquake in 31 BCE struck the Dead Sea region and Jerusalem under Herod’s reign, reportedly killing 30,000 people. Herod is said to have used his army’s survival as political proof of divine favor.

Three Lessons From the Ancient World

Ancient civilizations drew three enduring lessons from their long encounter with earthquakes. The first was architectural: the Romans developed arches and domes to distribute structural stress, while the Inca perfected mortarless interlocking stonework that flexed rather than cracked. The second was political and religious: every major earthquake tended to trigger a wave of piety and repentance, and rulers’ fortunes were often bound, in the public imagination, to the mood of heaven. The third was scientific — a slow arc running from the Greek myth of the “Earth Shaker,” through China’s bronze seismoscope, toward genuine attempts to understand the planet itself.

From Divine Wrath to Tectonic Plates

The modern era transformed this picture entirely. Earthquakes are no longer attributed to the anger of the gods but to geology and the movement of tectonic plates — the understanding that the Earth’s crust is divided into roughly a dozen plates that shift slowly, and that friction or collision between them produces the shaking. That scientific understanding has, in turn, produced new tools: seismic monitoring systems capable of issuing warnings seconds before shaking arrives, earthquake-resistant building codes in Japan and California, and hazard maps identifying high-risk zones such as the Pacific Ring of Fire.

That dual truth has echoed forward into the modern record — from the Lisbon earthquake of 1755, to Japan’s 2011 disaster, to the devastating Turkey-Syria earthquake of 2023 — each pairing catastrophic loss with an outpouring of cross-border solidarity.

A Message From the Earth

For ancient humanity, the earthquake was a message from the earth itself: feared first, then studied, then eventually built against. That progression — from dread of divine anger to the mapping of tectonic plates — traces one of humanity’s longest intellectual journeys. Even today, thousands of years later, the word “earthquake” still produces something close to the same awe that gripped our ancestors, even if our understanding of it has changed completely.
