Washington, D.C. — Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Irro) is in the United States this month on a high-profile diplomatic mission aimed at deepening security, economic, and strategic cooperation with Washington while advancing his government’s long-standing campaign for international recognition.

Irro, who took office in December 2024 after winning Somaliland’s presidential election, arrived in Washington in early September 2026 with a senior delegation that includes ministers of foreign affairs, defense, and aviation. The visit marks his first trip to the U.S. since assuming the presidency.

A keynote at the Hudson Institute

Key engagements have included a keynote address at the Hudson Institute on September 14, titled “Somaliland as a Strategic Partner in the Horn of Africa.” In the speech and subsequent discussions, Irro highlighted Somaliland’s relative stability, democratic institutions, and strategic location along the Gulf of Aden and near the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait—critical maritime routes threatened by Houthi attacks and regional instability.

Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas), a vocal advocate for closer U.S.-Somaliland ties, reiterated support for U.S. recognition of Somaliland’s sovereignty and called for a separate travel advisory distinguishing it from Somalia. Irro also met House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Brian Mast (R-Florida) and Senator Mike Rounds (R-South Dakota), along with Representatives John Rose (R-Tennessee) and John Moolenaar (R-Michigan).

The visit comes amid heightened geopolitical interest in the Horn of Africa. Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 and has operated as a de facto state with its own government, elections, and security forces, though it lacks broad international recognition. Israel became the first country to formally recognize it in late 2025.

Irro is expected to continue engagements in Washington before traveling to New York around the UN General Assembly, where he aims to further promote Somaliland’s case to international partners.
