IHRO-AFRICA Supports Fatima Maada Bio’s Call for Permanent African Seat at UN Security Council
The International Human Rights Observatory says Africa’s exclusion from permanent Security Council membership, despite 54 nations and over 1.5 billion people, is an increasingly indefensible gap in global governance.
ABUJA, NIGERIA — The International Human Rights Observatory (IHRO-AFRICA) has expressed strong support for concerns raised by Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Fatima Maada Bio, over Africa’s continued exclusion from permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council.
Speaking during an informal discussion at Harvard, the First Lady questioned why Africa, with 54 countries and more than 1.5 billion people, continues to have no permanent representation on one of the world’s most influential bodies responsible for international peace and security.
She reportedly noted that while African countries can be elected to non-permanent seats on the Security Council, the continent has no permanent seat and therefore lacks the veto power enjoyed by the five existing permanent members.
A Question of Fairness
Reacting to the development, Ambassador Chimbo Obieze, Chief Operating Officer of IHRO-AFRICA, commended Fatima Maada Bio for drawing international attention to what he described as a critical issue of global representation and fairness.
Obieze said Africa’s growing population, strategic importance, natural resources, economic potential and contributions to global peace make its absence from the permanent membership structure increasingly difficult to justify.
According to him, United Nations Security Council reform should be approached as an urgent global governance priority, with meaningful consideration given to permanent African representation.

A Call for a United Front
He added that IHRO-AFRICA supports constructive diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a more inclusive, equitable and representative international system.
The organization further called on African governments, regional institutions, civil society organizations and international partners to strengthen diplomatic engagement on Security Council reform and advance a united African position.
