Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand and Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne have issued a joint statement condemning Iran’s destabilizing actions in the Middle East and calling for them to end immediately.

In the statement released on September 6, 2026, the ministers said Iran’s continued threats to vessels seeking to transit the Strait of Hormuz, its pursuit of illicit nuclear activities, and its support for regional proxy groups “continue to undermine global peace and security.”

Anand and Champagne noted that Canada is working closely with partners, including within the G7, to maintain significant pressure on Iran. This includes support for efforts led by the United States, France and the United Kingdom to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, as well as continued sanctions on Iran, including those announced under the U.S.-led Operation Economic Outcast. Canada is also backing efforts to disrupt Iran’s ability to finance terrorist activities.

The statement highlighted that since 2010, Canada has sanctioned 492 Iranian individuals and entities under the Special Economic Measures Act and the Justice for Victims of Corrupt Foreign Officials Act.

Ottawa pledged to pursue additional measures in coordination with its partners to advance peace and security in the region and keep pressure on Iran to end its “malign behaviour.”

Anand shared the joint statement on social media, underscoring Canada’s position that these Iranian activities must cease.
