The Abrahamic Movement has issued a formal appeal for the protection of Syria’s Alawite community and all civilians caught in the country’s ongoing violence, citing what it described as deeply troubling reports of killings, abductions, and human rights violations targeting people because of who they are.

In a statement released this week, the interfaith organization said it was watching developments in Syria “with deep concern,” and condemned what it called attacks on innocent people “because of their religious, ethnic, or social identity.” The statement was signed by Ambassador Chimbo Obieze, Special Envoy and Chairperson of the Abrahamic Movement’s Nigeria Chapter.

The appeal comes amid mounting reports from inside Syria of violence affecting Alawite civilians in particular, alongside continued instability facing other minority and majority communities across the country. The Abrahamic Movement stopped short of assigning blame to any single actor, framing its statement instead as a call to conscience directed at “the relevant authorities, international organizations, humanitarian agencies, and community leaders.”
