Video Purports to Show Ideological Chanting at an Idlib Girls’ School; Broader Evidence Documents Jihadist and Anti-Israel Themes in HTS-Linked Religious Education
A video circulating on X since 17 October 2026 shows large numbers of girls and young women in full black niqab assembled in orderly ranks in a school courtyard in northwestern Syria. The account that first amplified the footage, @SyriaCoast (Sarah, Director of the Alawite Desk at the International Free Coalition and founder of Western Syria Advocacy), described the scene as “ISIS-style indoctrination” at girls’ primary schools in Idlib and attributed specific morning chants to the sponsorship of the Ministry of Awqaf.
The original post is reproduced below in full, word for word:
ISIS-STYLE INDOCTRINATION IN SYRIA’S SCHOOLS. At girls’ primary schools in Idlib, morning chants reportedly held under the Ministry of Awqaf’s sponsorship include: “Welcome death in the name of Allah.” “Damascus and Jerusalem belong to us, us, us.” These are schoolgirls, not soldiers. Under Syria’s jihadist-led regime, schools are teaching children to glorify death instead of teaching them how to live. Disturbing echoes of ISIS’s “Cubs of the Caliphate.” Watch the video. #Syria #Idlib #ChildIndoctrination #CubsOfTheCaliphate #ISIS #Extremism #ProtectChildren #NewSyria
In the footage, hundreds of girls and women stand in disciplined formation, many holding small booklets, under a basketball hoop and concrete school buildings typical of the region. Arabic hashtags overlaid on the footage read variations of “#طريف_نوبلاتي” and “#سوريا_للجميع” alongside a circular logo featuring a bearded figure against the Syrian flag. What the video cannot by itself establish, however, is the precise wording of any chant, the date of filming, the exact school identity, or formal Ministry of Awqaf sponsorship of that particular assembly. What Independent Sources Confirm About Dar al-Wahy al-Sharif
The wider institutional picture is far better documented. Dar al-Wahy al-Sharif (DWS, “House of the Noble Revelation”) is a real and significant network of Qur’anic and primary schools founded in 2017 in Idlib under the patronage of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). Peer-reviewed fieldwork published in the International Journal of Middle East Studies (Cambridge) describes DWS as the region’s most expansive educational institution of its kind, blending intensive Qur’anic recitation with a nationalist-Islamic pedagogy aimed at producing an “exceptional Qur’anic generation.” By the 2024–25 academic year the network was educating approximately 16,000 children across more than seventy institutions and twenty-eight kindergartens.
Expansion of Dar al-Wahy al-Sharif
An analysis of 65 textbooks and workbooks used by the network (2024–2026) conducted by the Alma Research and Education Center found systematic anti-Israel framing, maps that erase the State of Israel and label the entire territory “Palestine,” portrayals of Jews and Christians as religious adversaries, and material that glorifies jihad against “infidels.” The findings were reported by the Jerusalem Post and subsequent European coverage. Alma is an Israeli research and advocacy organisation; its detailed textbook examples therefore deserve serious attention while ideally being corroborated by additional independent curriculum reviews.
Official Response: Temporary Ban on School Slogans
On 29 September 2025 the Syrian Ministry of Education issued a circular prohibiting the chanting of any slogan or anthem in public and private schools pending adoption of a national anthem and an official ministry motto. The decision followed circulating videos of students in Aleppo countryside reciting sectarian and religious slogans during morning assembly. Multiple outlets, including the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Sky News Arabia and state agency SANA, confirmed the temporary ban.

The ISIS Analogy: Valid Comparison, Not Continuity
ISIS’s systematic use of children for religious-political indoctrination and militarised propaganda—the “Cubs of the Caliphate”—is extensively documented. Drawing an analytical parallel between that model and the current pattern of intensive religious-political messaging in certain Idlib-linked schools is defensible. Claiming organisational continuity between Dar al-Wahy al-Sharif and the Islamic State is not. The article therefore treats the comparison as historical and thematic, not as evidence of direct ISIS involvement.
Source-Weight Caveats
The strongest anchors remain the Cambridge IJMES fieldwork and the Syrian Education Ministry’s own circular. Alma’s textbook analysis supplies concrete primary examples that warrant attention. The X post originates from an account linked to Alawite advocacy organisations critical of Syria’s post-Assad authorities. That affiliation does not render the video false; it does raise the evidentiary bar for the exact translation, context, geolocation and routine character of the alleged chants. Confirmation through original Arabic audio analysis, school identification and reporting by outlets without an advocacy stake remains necessary.
Conclusion
Credible, multi-source evidence establishes that a large HTS-linked religious-school network operating across multiple Syrian provinces teaches a curriculum containing anti-Israel, anti-Jewish, anti-Christian and jihad-glorifying themes. A video that appears to show a highly disciplined assembly of girls in full niqab in an Idlib school courtyard raises legitimate concern about the atmosphere in which those themes are delivered. The two specific chants quoted on 17 October 2026 have not been independently verified. The fair assessment is therefore:
Documented ideological indoctrination concerns in DWS/Idlib schooling; unverified specific incident; ISIS analogy valid as historical comparison, not as proof of direct organisational continuity.
Protecting children from glorification of death and sectarian hatred remains an urgent obligation regardless of which political authority currently controls the Ministry of Education or the Ministry of Awqaf.
