For decades, the word “Zionism” has often been presented through the lens of political conflict, propaganda, and competing media narratives. As a result, many people encounter the term primarily as an accusation rather than understanding its historical meaning to the Jewish people.

At its core, Zionism is the belief in the right of the Jewish people to national self-determination in their ancestral homeland. It grew out of an ancient Jewish attachment to the Land of Israel — an attachment expressed throughout Jewish scripture, prayer, history, and tradition — and developed into a modern political movement in the late nineteenth century.

Zionism should not automatically be equated with hatred of Palestinians, hostility toward Arabs, or unconditional support for every decision made by an Israeli government. Just as supporting another people’s right to self-determination does not require endorsing every action of its government, recognizing Jewish self-determination should not be treated differently.

When Slogans Replace History

Media, political movements, and propaganda from different sides have sometimes reduced a complicated history to slogans. When Zionism is portrayed simply as something inherently evil, colonial, or conspiratorial, the Jewish historical and religious connection to the land is erased from the discussion. Misinformation of this kind does not contribute to peace; it deepens hostility and prevents people from understanding one another.

For many Jews, that connection is also understood through the biblical promise of the Land of Israel.

Understanding, Not Erasure

Recognizing this connection does not require denying anyone else’s humanity, dignity, or aspirations. Peace becomes possible when the rights and histories of peoples are understood rather than erased.

The Abrahamic spirit should encourage us to replace misinformation with knowledge, demonization with dialogue, and hatred with understanding. Supporting the Jewish people’s right to live safely in their ancestral homeland can and should go hand in hand with seeking peace, dignity, coexistence, and a better future for everyone in the region.
