Tragedy in Bangkok: 30 Lives Lost as Fire Sweeps Through Chatuchak Nightspot
A late-night blaze at a crowded pub and live-music venue in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district has left a nation in mourning — journalist & and communication trainer Beena Khan among the voices from around the world offering prayers and solidarity.

A devastating fire tore through the popular Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao — also known as the Na Ladprao beer hall — a neon-lit pub and live-music venue in Bangkok’s bustling Chatuchak district, late on Sunday night, July 12, 2026. The blaze claimed at least 27 to 30 lives, with dozens more injured, many in critical condition, marking one of the deadliest nightclub or entertainment-venue fires in the Thai capital in recent years.
The fire erupted around midnight near Soi Lat Phrao 1, close to the busy Lat Phrao intersection. According to initial reports, the venue was crowded with patrons enjoying live music when smoke and flames rapidly spread. Witnesses described chaos as thick, toxic smoke filled the single-story building, leading many to flee toward the rear restrooms in search of safety — only to become trapped.
Authorities point to an electrical short circuit in a ceiling-mounted air conditioner near the stage as the likely ignition source. This sparked flames that quickly ignited flammable decorations, causing an explosion-like effect and a blackout. The fire spread rapidly due to the venue’s layout, materials, and possibly obstructed pathways.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who visited the scene, noted that a musician performing at the time reported seeing smoke from a circuit breaker before the power failed. Many victims succumbed primarily to smoke inhalation rather than direct burns.
By the Numbers
- Deaths: Official counts initially reported 27 fatalities (9 men and 18 women), with some sources indicating the toll has risen to 30 as more bodies were recovered or identified.
- Injuries: Over 60–70 people were hospitalized, with around 22 in critical condition. Victims were distributed across multiple hospitals.
Firefighters arrived swiftly but faced challenges with the dense smoke and layout. Rescuers found numerous bodies slumped in the rear restrooms, which lacked clear fire exits. Reports emerged of obstructed emergency exits, including one allegedly blocked by a candy table or other furniture, and possible padlocked doors — issues now under intense scrutiny.
Grieving families began claiming bodies on Tuesday, July 14, while others anxiously awaited news of missing loved ones.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt vowed stricter enforcement of safety regulations for venues licensed as restaurants with live music. Investigators are examining:
- Electrical systems and ceiling materials.
- Emergency exits and building compliance.
- Whether safety lapses, such as blocked or insufficient exits, contributed to the high casualty count.
The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation is leading the probe alongside police and forensic teams. This incident has renewed calls for improved fire safety standards in Thailand’s entertainment venues, which often operate with restaurant licenses but host large crowds for music and events.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul expressed condolences and assured full support for victims’ families and the injured. The tragedy has shocked Bangkok residents and drawn international attention, with footage of flames and smoke billowing from the venue circulating widely on social media.
This event occurs amid broader discussions on public safety in densely populated urban areas. Thailand has seen other major incidents in the past, but the rapid spread and entrapment in this case highlight vulnerabilities in older or repurposed entertainment spots.
