SAN DIEGO — Three people were killed Monday morning after two teenage shooters opened fire outside a mosque in the Clairemont neighborhood of San Diego, in what is being investigated by the FBI as a targeted attack on a house of worship. The shooting sent shockwaves through the Muslim American community and reignited a fierce national debate over hate, accountability, and political leadership.
An active shooter situation was first reported to law enforcement at the Islamic Center of San Diego (ICSD) at around 11:45 a.m. Officers arrived to find three people dead. Moments later, law enforcement located two suspects deceased in a vehicle blocks away from the scene — both having died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds. The FBI has since taken over the investigation.
NBC 7 San Diego had multiple crews on the scene gathering the latest information as the situation developed throughout the afternoon.

Dr. Anila Ali — Founder and CEO of the American Muslim Multifaith Women’s Empowerment Council (AMMWEC) — responded swiftly and with deep grief, calling on the Muslim community to pause and reflect while offering prayers for the victims, their families, and the witnesses of the attack.
Multiple people were killed at the Islamic Center of San Diego, and FBI are still investigating the attack. My heart is with the families who lost loved ones in the horrific shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego. No one should ever fear for their life in a house of worship.
As Muslims, we must pause and reflect deeply on this tragedy. Hate affects us all. It does not stop at one community, one faith, or one people. When hate is normalized anywhere, it eventually wounds everyone.
Today, we grieve with San Diego’s Muslim community. We pray for the victims, for their families, for the children and worshippers who witnessed this terror, and for a country where every synagogue, church, mosque, temple, and sacred space is protected.
May God heal the brokenhearted and guide us back to courage, compassion, and truth.
Sen. Rick Scott Challenges NYC Mayor: “Where Were You?”
As condolences poured in, the tragedy quickly intersected with a pre-existing political confrontation. U.S. Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) had earlier called out New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on X, posting a pointed challenge in response to viral footage of anti-Jewish demonstrations that unfolded in New York while the mayor remained silent.
Dr. Ali Fires Back at NYC Mayor Mamdani: “You Are the Reason Muslims Are Hated”
It was Senator Scott’s post that prompted one of Dr. Ali’s most scathing responses — a direct, unsparing rebuke of Mayor Mamdani that has since circulated widely across social media.
You @NYCMayor are the reason Muslims are hated — you do nothing for the Jews, who are your constituents. You watch them get threatened, injured, assaulted in your city under your watch! You encourage me to take away religious freedom and their free speech — and now you’re saying this.
There is a God up there who doesn’t approve of you and is watching. You! You truly have made many people look at Muslims in America — but you instead have unleashed the worst kind of hatred for Jews in America, like @CAIRNational, @Ilhan, @RashidaTlaib.
God blessed Prophet Abraham, peace be upon him — and He is watching you, Mamdani. I bet you don’t even know the Durood e Ibrahimi! But if you are a real Muslim, you would be a better leader to both Muslims, Jews, Christians, and everybody in New York!
He was busy hoisting a Hamas terrorist flag at city hall! #GoMandaniGo
📌 Context — Who Is Dr. Anila Ali?
Dr. Anila Ali is the Founder and CEO of the American Muslim Multifaith Women’s Empowerment Council (AMMWEC), a prominent voice for interfaith cooperation, Muslim American civic engagement, and a fierce critic of anti-Americanism within the Muslim community. She has repeatedly condemned Hamas, CAIR, and political leaders she accuses of stoking hatred — while championing both Jewish and Muslim Americans’ right to safety and dignity. Her willingness to speak uncomfortable truths within her own community has made her one of the most distinctive and consequential voices in American Muslim public life.
A Nation Grieves — And Demands Accountability
The attack at the Islamic Center of San Diego is among the deadliest assaults on a Muslim house of worship in recent American history. It has sparked urgent calls not only for justice for the victims but for a reckoning with the broader culture of hate that many say has been enabled — and in some cases openly encouraged — by political leaders who speak the language of inclusion while failing to act against intimidation, violence, and incitement.
Dr. Ali’s posts capture a painful duality felt by many Muslim Americans: grief for their community’s losses and fury at leaders who have made it easier for all forms of religious hatred to fester — against Jews, against Muslims, against anyone who worships differently. In her framing, the tragedies are connected. Hate, she argues, is indivisible.
The FBI investigation into the San Diego shooting is ongoing. Faith & Freedom News will continue to update this story as new information becomes available.
Our prayers are with the families of the victims, the Muslim community of San Diego, and all Americans who believe every house of worship must be a place of safety and peace.
