Netanyahu’s Secret Abu Dhabi Visit: Reports Point to a Wider Security Huddle on Iran and the Houthis
Officials confirm only a bilateral meeting with UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed, but Israeli and Gulf-sourced reports describe a multi-country session driven by a Saudi request for help against Houthi attacks.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made an unannounced trip to Abu Dhabi on Sunday, September 27, 2026, for talks with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan (MBZ). Both governments officially confirmed only a bilateral meeting focused on strengthening relations and regional challenges, according to AP.
The UAE’s state news agency WAM said the two leaders discussed bilateral relations and ways to strengthen them. Israel’s Prime Minister’s Office said the visit came at MBZ’s invitation and, in some responses, dismissed broader characterizations as “fake news.” Neither side mentioned third-country participants.
Chapter 2The Expanded-Session Claim
The most detailed account comes from Dror Balazada, an Iranian-affairs correspondent for Israel’s C14 News, citing a senior Emirati source. He reported that the meeting began with the two leaders and their delegations, then expanded to include representatives of other Arab states, explicitly naming Saudi Arabia. On September 29 he said representatives from 10 countries took part. He also named Israel’s ambassador to the UAE, Yossi Shelley, as responsible for advancing the effort.
Israeli outlets offered partial corroboration. Israel Hayom and Ynet described envoys from Gulf and Arab states without diplomatic ties to Israel. Mossad chief Roman Gofman and National Security Council head Shmuel Ben-Ezra reportedly accompanied Netanyahu, and reports noted aircraft from Libya, Morocco, Qatar and an Emirati government flight from Riyadh arriving around the same time.

Chapter 3Jeddah, Germany and the CENTCOM Channel
The trail reportedly starts on September 14 in Jeddah, where Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman met CENTCOM chief Admiral Brad Cooper just after a large drone and missile attack on the Khamis Mushait air base. The Houthis had also captured the port of Mocha, seized Perim (Mayun) Island in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, and struck southern Saudi cities and the East-West oil pipeline.
Washington reportedly offered intelligence and targeting support but declined to authorize direct strikes. Riyadh then approached Israel indirectly through CENTCOM, seeking intelligence on Houthi deployments and plans. A secret military summit in Germany, hosted by Cooper, reportedly brought together commanders from the US, Israel, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and others.

Chapter 4Who Did What
Israeli outlets say Saudi Arabia was the initiating party, with Gofman arranging the meeting after a Saudi request for help against Houthi attacks. The United States acted as facilitator and approver: the meeting reportedly took place with US knowledge, and about 200 US personnel are already in the kingdom in non-kinetic roles, per regional reports. Israel reportedly signaled willingness to help regional states with air defense, as it did for the UAE.

Chapter 5The Iron Dome Precedent
The talk of air defense fits a documented pattern from the earlier US–Israel war with Iran (February–April 2026). Israel deployed an Iron Dome battery and IDF operators to the UAE after a Netanyahu–MBZ call, its first operational use outside Israel and the US, and US officials later confirmed it. Netanyahu had also claimed a secret March visit to the UAE, which Abu Dhabi publicly denied.
Some reporting linked the timing to Netanyahu seeking Emirati clarification on claims that MBZ warned him of a major Hamas operation before October 7, 2023, a claim both Israel and the UAE have denied.
The visit also comes weeks before Israel’s elections, scheduled for late October 2026.
