Karak Church Attack: What Is Confirmed, What Is Not, and Why the ISIS Claim Remains Unverified
A real, independently documented attack on a Christian funeral in southern Jordan has drawn sweeping claims. Here is what the evidence supports.
Western Syria Alliance post on X, shared by Sarah (@SyriaCoast), Director, Alawite Desk, IFCoalitionGunmen attacked mourners at St. Georgeโs Greek Orthodox Church in Jordanโs Karak governorate on October 23, 2026. The Western Syria Alliance (WSA) condemned the attack the same day. Independent coverage confirms the attack, but it does not support every wider claim attached to it. Reuters, CNN and others document what happened.
Key finding
No confirmed claim of responsibility has been reported in the latest reliable coverage reviewed, dated October 24, 2026. Reuters states: โThere has been no immediate claim of responsibility.โ The BBC also reports that no one has admitted carrying out the attack (Reuters). What happened
The shooting took place during a funeral in the village variously spelled Hamoud, Hammoud or Hmoud. Accounts broadly agree: gunmen arrived by vehicle, fired on mourners for several minutes, then fled. Security-camera footage described by CNN and The National shows three armed people firing outside before moving toward the church. Some early witnesses spoke of two attackers; the footage reporting says three.
The casualty count is still moving
WSAโs figure of six dead and 28 injured matches the early official toll reported by Reuters. Later reports differ, and no single reconciled figure exists yet.
The statement in full
Below is the WSA statement dated October 23, 2026, in English and Arabic.
The Western Syria Alliance (WSA) strongly condemns the reported terrorist attack targeting Christians in the Jordanian city of Al-Karak, which, according to circulating reports, left at least six people dead and 28 others injured. WSA extends its deepest condolences to the families of the victims, wishes the injured a swift recovery, and expresses its full solidarity with the people of Jordan.
WSA emphasizes that extremist jihadist organizations pose a direct threat to Christians and other religious communities across the Middle East. These organizations have a long history of massacres, violence, and religious persecution, particularly in Syria and Iraq, as well as terrorist attacks in Jordan.
These developments come amid growing concerns over the expansion of jihadist extremism following Hayat Tahrir al-Shamโs (HTS) rise to power in Damascus. WSA has repeatedly warned of the dangers of spreading extremist Islamist ideology and integrating jihadist factions into Syriaโs security and military institutions without adequate vetting and accountability. Such developments risk turning Syria into a base for transnational terrorism and a threat to regional and global security.
In this context, WSA notes the Jordanian authoritiesโ decision to ban the Muslim Brotherhood and stresses the urgent need for effective measures against extremist organizations and militias to protect civilians and prevent the spread of violence and terrorism.
Accordingly, the Western Syria Alliance calls for the following:
- Dismantling Jihadist Militias: Dismantle armed jihadist organizations and militias in Jordan and withdraw them from areas inhabited by religious and ethnic minorities in Syria, particularly Alawite, Christian, and Druze communities.
- International Protection: Establish credible, independent international monitoring mechanisms and provide effective protection for civilians and communities threatened by persecution, forced displacement, and killings.
- Accountability and Justice: Conduct independent international investigations into massacres and grave human rights violations committed against minorities in Syria and hold all those responsible accountable.
- International Counterterrorism Cooperation: Coordinate regional and international efforts to prevent Syrian territory from being used for the recruitment, financing, and planning of cross-border terrorist operations.
The Western Syria Alliance reaffirms that the indigenous communities of Western Syria, particularly Alawites and Christians, are integral to the security and stability of the Middle East. Eliminating the threat posed by armed jihadist organizations and protecting these communities are essential to regional and global security and constitute an urgent humanitarian obligation that cannot be delayed.

Checking the statement claim by claim
| WSA claim or implication | Assessment |
|---|---|
| An attack on Christians occurred in Karak | Supported Independent reports document an armed attack on a church funeral. |
| At least six killed, 28 injured | Early count Matches the first official toll; later reports are higher. |
| The attack was extremist or terrorist violence | Supported King Abdullah II and officials called it terrorism; the interior minister spoke of a โgroup of extremists.โ |
| A specific jihadist organization is responsible | Not established Officials said it was too early to discuss perpetratorsโ affiliations. |
| A link to HTS or Damascus | Not substantiated No incident reporting reviewed supplies this link. |
| Jordan banned the Muslim Brotherhood | True, but separate The ban came in April 2025, over other alleged plots, and does not show Brotherhood responsibility here. |
| Monitoring, dismantling militias, counterterrorism cooperation | Policy demands These are WSAโs positions, not findings about this attack. |
What about the ISIS claims?
An unverified allegation is circulating. A Wikipedia entry mentions a purported video in which the alleged attackers pledge allegiance to ISIS. The entry itself says the video was not verified, the organizational connection was not officially confirmed, and ISIS had not officially claimed responsibility. It was not independently authenticated, and it does not appear in the Reuters or BBC reporting reviewed. It should be treated as an unverified allegation, not an established ISIS claim.
Three separate questions are being blurred together:
Jordanian officials say it is too early to determine whether the attackers had links to known groups inside or outside Jordan. Calling the assailants โextremistsโ is not an attribution to a specific organization (SBS). One possible source of confusion: ISIS claimed a separate attack in Karak in 2016. That historical claim does not apply to the October 2026 church shooting.
The response so far
Jordan declared three days of national mourning. King Abdullah visited the injured and called for national unity. The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, the US embassy in Jordan and Al-Azhar condemned the attack, according to CNN. Those reactions show the attackโs wider impact but do not identify who organized it.
Bottom line
The attack is real and well documented. The identity of the gunmen, any organizational link, whether anyone directed or financed them, and the final casualty count all remain unresolved. Claims that go beyond that should be labeled as allegations until investigators say otherwise.- Western Syria Alliance on X
