What was to be a historic evening — President Donald Trump’s first appearance at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in more than a decade — turned into a harrowing security incident Saturday night when a heavily armed man charged a Secret Service checkpoint in the lobby of the Washington Hilton and opened fire. The response was swift and decisive: agents engaged the suspect in seconds, the ballroom was never breached, and every protected official was evacuated safely.
Trump later told reporters it initially sounded like a dropped tray. It was anything but.
The dinner was underway — guests had just been served a spring pea and burrata salad when loud bangs erupted from the lobby area outside the ballroom. Witnesses reported hearing between five and eight shots. Inside the ballroom, Secret Service agents immediately began shouting commands: “Stay down!” and “Out of the way, sir!” as guests dove under tables.
Agents at the security checkpoint outside had already engaged the suspect. Cole Tomas Allen, armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives, charged the checkpoint aggressively. One agent was struck in the chest by gunfire at close range. His bulletproof vest absorbed the round. He was not seriously injured.
Allen did not reach the ballroom. He was taken down by Secret Service agents in the lobby and apprehended alive. Law enforcement recovered a long gun, shell casings, and the remaining weapons at the scene.
Within seconds of the shots, the presidential protection detail moved. Video footage circulated widely afterward showing agents surrounding the table where President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and other senior officials were seated, physically moving the president toward the exit. Trump briefly tripped or stumbled during the rapid extraction but was immediately assisted and confirmed unharmed.
Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were also evacuated from the ballroom. The group was moved to a secure location — including a stop in the hotel’s presidential suite, the same suite historically associated with the aftermath of the 1981 Reagan shooting at the same venue.
Approximately two hours after the incident, still wearing his tuxedo, President Trump appeared at the White House to address the nation. His remarks were calm, detailed, and unmistakably defiant.
“I thought it was a tray going down. It was pretty loud noise, and it was from quite far away. He hadn’t reached the area at all. They really got him… the performance of the Secret Service and the police, all of the law enforcement — I thought it was really good. It was very quick. There wasn’t a lot of time to be thinking, because it was a matter of seconds before we were out the door.”
— President Donald J. Trump, White House Press Conference · April 25, 2026Trump described the suspect as “a very sick person” and a “lone wolf,” adding that the suspect appeared to have acted alone with no broader conspiracy. He praised the Secret Service as “some very brave members” and called their response “a beautiful thing to see.” He also confirmed that all Cabinet members and protectees were safe and shared surveillance footage of the suspect charging the checkpoint on Truth Social.
The ballroom was cleared and the National Guard repositioned inside the hotel. An initial attempt to resume the dinner program was abandoned. The White House Correspondents’ Association announced the dinner will be rescheduled within 30 days. WHCA President stated simply: “We will do this again.”
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the Bureau is actively investigating the scene, the weapons recovered, and all witnesses. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated charges would be filed promptly. Authorities are also searching the suspect’s residence in Torrance.
The incident is the third known threat against Trump in proximity to an official event since 2024, following the assassination attempt at Butler, Pennsylvania. Security at future high-profile political and media events is expected to be further heightened in its wake.
“Today we need levels of security that probably nobody has ever seen before… We’re not going to let anybody take over our society.”
