Yemen: Dozens Detained
in Campaign Against
Christians
Houthi rebels have launched a systematic campaign of arbitrary arrests targeting Yemen’s underground Christian community — silencing believers, separating families, and attempting to extinguish a faith that continues to spread despite the darkness.
In many parts of the world, opposition is expected for those who commit their lives to Christ. Unfortunately, obtaining reliable information from some of these regions is often difficult — and Yemen is no exception. Late last year, Houthi rebels, who control approximately one-third of the country, launched a campaign of arbitrary detentions specifically targeting Christians. In January 2026 alone, more than 50 followers of Jesus were arrested, while another 43 had been abducted.
Most of the recently detained individuals have been prevented from communicating with any of their family members or legal representatives. Officials refuse to acknowledge whether the believers are being held in custody or disclose their location — leaving loved ones in agonizing uncertainty.
A Walking Bible
One believer in Yemen realized that he could potentially be apprehended during the rebels’ campaign. In preparation, he devoted himself to the memorization of Scripture — determined that no prison could take from him what was written on his heart.
“I want to be a ‘walking Bible,’ so that wherever I’m taken, I can share about Jesus.”— A Yemeni Christian believer, in his final recorded conversation before disappearing
These words proved to be part of this Christian man’s final conversation before his sudden disappearance. His story is not unique — it is representative of the courage and spiritual resolve found in Yemen’s underground church, a community that faces existential danger yet chooses to witness rather than hide.
Systematic Suppression
The Houthi-led campaign is not random. It represents a deliberate and organized effort to identify, isolate, and eliminate the presence of Christianity in the regions under their control. Yemen already ranks among the most dangerous countries in the world for Christians, and this latest wave of arrests signals an alarming escalation in the intensity and coordination of that suppression.
According to reporting by Open Doors, Human Rights Watch, Mission Network News, Christian Aid Mission, and Premier Christian News, Houthi authorities are conducting these arrests without legal process or transparency. Families are left without answers. Lawyers are denied access. And official channels offer nothing but silence.
Opposition and Opportunity
Despite growing opposition, Yemen’s underground church continues to expand. The arrests, while devastating, have not broken the spirit of the Christian community — if anything, they have deepened the resolve of those who remain free to continue sharing the Gospel.
Brobbel’s words reflect a perspective shared by those who have long followed the history of persecuted Christianity: that suffering, rather than silencing the church, has historically catalyzed its growth. The believers of Yemen carry that same testimony.
-
Prayerfully uphold detained brothers and sisters in Christ, asking the Lord to ensure their safety and well-being, and provide needed comfort and strength to their concerned loved ones awaiting news.
-
In general, pray that all Christians living in Yemen — striving to shine Christ’s light amid deep spiritual darkness — will receive guidance from the Holy Spirit and the empowerment to remain faithful witnesses of God’s grace.
-
Despite possible threats of danger, may the Lord bring about many open doors of opportunity for His followers to effectively reach others in their communities with the Good News of the Gospel — including those who oppose them — using these challenging times to further advance His Kingdom.
