In a recent Facebook post, Tristan Azbej, State Secretary for the Aid of Persecuted Christians and head of the Hungary Helps Program, announced his arrival in Sokoto, Nigeria—a momentous diplomatic event that marks a new chapter in international cooperation and interreligious dialogue. Joining him on this historic mission was Member of the European Parliament Hölvény György, emphasizing the strong collaborative spirit behind this initiative.
Azbej expressed his honor at being the first Hungarian head of state to be received in the courtyard of the Sultan of the ancient Caliphate of Sokoto. He shared that His Eminence Sultan Sa’adu Abubakar, a member of the 20th dynasty of the caliphate, welcomed them with warmth and respect. The Sultan, who also serves as a Muslim spiritual leader, emphasized the importance of peaceful interreligious coexistence and mutual respect—a value deeply rooted in the teachings of Islam.

During the meeting, the Sultan spoke with deep admiration for Hungarian history and culture, acknowledging the significant humanitarian support that Hungary provides through Christian churches to the people of Sokoto. This support is extended regardless of religion, especially to those facing humanitarian and security crises. Azbej highlighted the crucial role of the Sultan—not only as a symbolic figurehead but also as a key advocate for the protection of the rights and safety of Christian minorities, who play an essential role in education and health care in the region.
This historic meeting reinforces the belief that more people are choosing the path of peace and mutual respect, an approach that continues to guide Hungary Helps’ international mission. As Tristan Azbej proudly stated, this spirit of cooperation and solidarity is “how we roll!”
