In a recent Facebook post, Tristan Azbej, State Secretary for the Aid of Persecuted Christians and head of the Hungary Helps Program, shared a powerful update about his missionary activities in Pakistan. “I’m in Jaranwala, Pakistan—a place where the Christian community was brutally attacked in 2023,” he wrote. Jaranwala, still bearing the scars of violent attacks that saw churches destroyed, Bibles burned, and homes ravaged, remains a poignant reminder of the risks faced by Christians simply for their faith.

During his visit, Azbej and his team focused on listening to the local community, ensuring that those affected by the violence felt supported and understood. “We came to listen to them and to make them feel: they are not left behind,” he stated. Despite the fresh wounds from past atrocities, the resilience, deep faith, and unyielding hope of the people in Jaranwala struck him profoundly.

Tristan Azbej strongly condemned the violent acts perpetrated against the community. “We condemn violent acts—faith can never be a reason for hate,” he declared. At the same time, he welcomed the Pakistani leadership’s response, noting that the government has condemned the attacks and is expected to provide genuine security for those wishing to live in peace.

Highlighting Hungary’s ongoing commitment to global solidarity, Azbej reaffirmed that Hungary is actively providing humanitarian assistance in Pakistan through the Hungary Helps – Magyarország Segít Program. “Solidarity. Worship. Support,” he concluded, encapsulating the mission’s core values as it continues to offer hope and aid to communities in need.

In 2023, Jaranwala witnessed a harrowing attack on its Christian community that left deep scars and widespread fear. Militants targeted local churches and Christian neighborhoods, setting fire to places of worship and burning sacred texts, including Bibles. Homes were ransacked and damaged, forcing many families to flee their communities in search of safety.

The brutal assault not only disrupted daily life but also highlighted the vulnerability of religious minorities in the region. Community leaders and human rights advocates have since called for stronger protective measures and greater international support to ensure that such attacks never recur, urging authorities to take decisive action against extremism and safeguard the freedom of all citizens.
