New York, August 20, 2025 — Billionaire investor and philanthropist Daniel S. Loeb, founder of the hedge fund Third Point, has been elected chairman of the board of trustees of the Museum of Jewish Heritage – A Living Memorial to the Holocaust. He will formally assume the role on October 27, succeeding Bruce Ratner, who has led the board since 2014.
Loeb, long active in Jewish philanthropy, has focused much of his giving on Jewish education. Last December, he redirected support from Columbia University, his alma mater, to Yeshiva University, contributing $1 million at its Hanukkah Dinner fundraiser. He also launched the Loeb Scholars Program at Yeshiva University and has supported numerous Hillel chapters and Chabad centers across the country.
“It is an honor to step into this role at such a fraught moment,” Loeb said in a statement. “Everywhere we look, anti-Semitism is on the rise, affirming the crucial importance of the Museum’s mission: remembrance and education, but also vigilance and pride.”
Beyond his educational focus, Loeb has been active in Jewish communal security and humanitarian causes. He has supported the Aleph Institute, United Hatzalah, and the City of David, and played a role in launching the Community Security Initiative in 2019, which bolsters safety measures for Jewish institutions across the New York metropolitan area. Loeb is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
Loeb’s appointment was confirmed by the board on August 18, making him only the museum’s third board chair. Ratner, who first joined the board in 1996, will remain as a trustee to ensure a smooth transition.
During his 11-year tenure, Ratner oversaw a doubling of fundraising revenues and the launch of landmark exhibitions, including the acclaimed “Auschwitz: Not long ago. Not far away.” exhibition, which traveled from Madrid to New York. Most recently, he supported the launch of “Survivor Stories,” an artificial intelligence–powered project preserving the testimonies of Holocaust survivors.
“I am immensely proud of all we have accomplished together to preserve memory and promote education in these challenging times,” Ratner said. “I am confident that under Daniel Loeb’s leadership, the Museum will continue to honor its mission and ensure that future generations gain a deeper understanding of the Holocaust and its lessons for humanity.”
The leadership change marks a new chapter for the Museum of Jewish Heritage, which continues to serve as one of the United States’ leading institutions dedicated to Holocaust remembrance and education.
