Sister Marie-Agnes Suwanna Buasap, a dedicated Catholic nun and coordinator of Talitha Kum Thailand, has been recognized by the Thai government for her exceptional work in combating human trafficking and protecting vulnerable women and children.
On June 5, 2024—Thailand’s National Anti-Human Trafficking Day—Buasap received the prestigious “Outstanding Person Award for the Prevention and Suppression of Human Trafficking” from Thailand’s Ministry of Social Development and Human Security. The ceremony honored individuals and organizations making significant contributions to anti-trafficking efforts across the country.
Global Network Fighting Human Trafficking
Buasap serves as coordinator for the Thai branch of Talitha Kum, an international network of Catholic religious sisters operating across 90 countries. Founded in 2009 by the International Union of Superiors General, this Rome-based organization takes its name from an Aramaic expression found in the Gospel of Mark, meaning “Maiden, I say to you, arise.”
The network’s mission focuses on ending human trafficking through collaborative efforts, education, and direct intervention in affected communities worldwide.
Addressing Thailand’s Human Trafficking Challenges
Thailand has faced ongoing criticism for trafficking issues within its textile industry, seafood sectors, and sex trade. The country serves as both a destination and transit point for trafficking victims, making comprehensive anti-trafficking efforts crucial for protecting vulnerable populations.
Since 2018, Sister Buasap has concentrated her efforts on youth protection through the establishment of “Talitha Kum Kids.” This initiative has trained over 3,000 teachers and strengthened leadership among Talitha Kum Youth Ambassadors, promoting peer-led awareness programs according to Radio Veritas Asia.
Comprehensive Approach to Protection and Empowerment
As a Sister of St. Paul de Chartres, Buasap has dedicated her vocation to promoting human dignity and rights for vulnerable women and girls. Her work encompasses multiple approaches to combating trafficking:
- Educational Outreach: Operating in 35 institutions across northern border areas of Thailand, her programs reach approximately 60,000 children with anti-trafficking education
- Economic Empowerment: Implementing chili cultivation programs that provide sustainable income opportunities for at-risk women
- Capacity Building: Leading workshops that strengthen community leadership and awareness
Recognition for Faith-Based Anti-Trafficking Organizations
The June 5 ceremony also recognized other faith-based and secular organizations working against human trafficking. Among the honorees was Stella Maris, the seafarers’ ministry of Chanthaburi Diocese in eastern central Thailand.
Stella Maris, operating under the Archdiocese of Bangkok, focuses on helping and rescuing trafficked fishermen and seafarers through collaboration with local authorities and marine networks. Their work addresses trafficking in Thailand’s significant fishing industry, where labor exploitation remains a persistent challenge.
Impact on Anti-Trafficking Efforts
Sister Buasap’s recognition highlights the critical role that faith-based organizations play in addressing human trafficking. Her comprehensive approach—combining education, economic empowerment, and direct intervention—demonstrates effective strategies for protecting vulnerable populations and preventing trafficking.
The award ceremony underscores Thailand’s commitment to addressing trafficking issues through partnerships with civil society organizations, religious groups, and international networks. These collaborative efforts are essential for creating sustainable solutions to protect those most at risk of exploitation.
Through her work with Talitha Kum Thailand and her broader advocacy efforts, Sister Marie-Agnes Suwanna Buasap continues to be a powerful voice for human dignity and protection in Southeast Asia’s ongoing fight against human trafficking.
