Uniting for Hope and Humanity
In an inspiring display of unity and compassion, Hungary’s humanitarian efforts continue to shine as key figures join forces to protect faith and serve those in need. Tristan Azbej, Hungary’s Secretary of State responsible for assisting persecuted Christians and spearheading the Hungary Helps program, recently shared a heartfelt message on social media. His call to action—“Protecting faith and serving those in need”—embodies the shared ideology of the Malta Knight Order, the Hungarian Malta Charity Service, and the Hungary Helps program.
He writes:
“
Protecting faith and serving those in need – this is the motto of the Malta Knight Order and this is the common ideology base on which the Hungarian Malta Charity Service and the Hungary Helps Program helps persecuted Christians in many countries.
We made an agreement with Peter Szabadheg heg, the new president of the Charity Service, Father Imre Kozma
May God bless your ministry!”
A Legacy of Service and Commitment
For over thirty years, the Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta has been at the forefront of humanitarian and development activities, responding to both natural disasters and man-made crises. Operating in accordance with internationally recognized humanitarian standards and the Sphere program, the organization has consistently adapted its operational plans to meet emerging challenges. Recently, when faced with urgent disaster management operations, HCSOM swiftly shifted its focus to provide comprehensive support to refugees and vulnerable populations—even stepping in proactively without an explicit governmental request.
Strengthening the Frontline
In anticipation of escalating crises, the Hungarian Charity Service enhanced its logistics along the Ukrainian-Hungarian border. Key locations such as Vásárosnamény, Fehérgyarmat, Tarpa, Szatmárcseke, and Gacsály now host robust warehousing and institutional capacities. These strategic sites play a crucial role in ensuring that aid reaches those in need promptly, especially as the organization provides targeted support to children, the elderly, individuals with disabilities, and families affected by displacement.
Collaborative Leadership and New Partnerships
The organization’s efforts have been further bolstered by new leadership and partnerships. An agreement forged with Peter Szabadheg—the newly appointed president of the Charity Service—and the esteemed Father Imre Kozma, reflects a shared vision of compassion and effective crisis management. Peter Szabadheg, a seasoned leader with a distinguished career in banking, management consulting, diplomacy, and charitable organizations, brings international experience and academic excellence to his role. Having served as Hungary’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom and held leadership positions with organizations like Rotary International, his involvement promises to amplify the impact of these humanitarian initiatives.
A Future Built on Faith and Solidarity
As the Hungarian government entrusts the Charity Service with the reception, care, and integration of refugees, both the Hungary Helps program and the Order of Malta stand as beacons of hope. Their dedicated efforts to support persecuted Christians and displaced families not only reflect a deep commitment to humanitarian values but also exemplify the power of faith-driven service in times of global need. With enhanced logistics, strategic planning, and a collaborative spirit, Hungary is paving the way for a future where compassion and solidarity triumph over adversity.
