Washington, D.C. – President Donald J. Trump has signed an executive order on March 27 aimed at combating historical revisionism and restoring what he calls “truth and sanity” to the telling of American history. The order focuses on eliminating ideological narratives in federal historical sites, museums, and national parks, ensuring that they emphasize American achievements and unity rather than division.
Restoring America’s Historical Legacy
In his executive order, Trump criticized recent efforts to “rewrite” history by portraying the nation’s founding and its historical milestones in a negative light. He stated that certain institutions, including the Smithsonian Institution and the National Park Service, have adopted an agenda that distorts American history, promoting narratives that highlight oppression rather than progress.
“The prior administration advanced this corrosive ideology,” the order states, referencing initiatives that framed Western values as oppressive and questioned foundational American principles such as individualism and hard work. Trump emphasized that federal historical sites should serve as “solemn and uplifting public monuments” that celebrate national unity and progress.
Revamping the Smithsonian Institution
A key provision of the order tasks Vice President J.D. Vance with ensuring that the Smithsonian Institution realigns with the administration’s historical vision. This includes removing “improper ideology” from exhibits and refocusing displays to highlight American innovation, achievements, and unity.
To reinforce this effort, the administration will work with Congress to prevent federal funds from supporting exhibits that “degrade shared American values” or “promote divisive ideologies.” Additionally, the White House made clear that the upcoming American Women’s History Museum must celebrate the achievements of women without recognizing transgender individuals as women.
Independence Hall and National Parks to Be Restored
In preparation for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026, the order directs the Department of the Interior to allocate funding for improvements to Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia. The administration has pledged to restore historical landmarks that have been altered in recent years due to ideological concerns.
Furthermore, the order mandates a review of public monuments, memorials, and statues that have been removed or changed since 2020. The Department of the Interior is instructed to reinstate or protect these monuments to ensure they reflect America’s historical achievements rather than modern political narratives.
A Nationwide Effort to Reinforce American Pride
This executive action aligns with Trump’s broader efforts to promote national pride and historical education that emphasizes American exceptionalism. The administration asserts that restoring historical integrity will unify Americans by focusing on the nation’s progress rather than dwelling on past conflicts.
“This order is about ensuring that future generations learn the true story of America—the story of freedom, resilience, and unparalleled progress,” Trump stated. “We will not allow our history to be rewritten by those who seek to divide us.”
As the administration moves forward with implementing these changes, the debate over how American history should be presented continues, with Trump’s supporters praising the order as necessary for protecting national identity, while critics argue it suppresses important historical discussions.
