Islamabad, March 23 – In a ceremony marked by patriotism and solemn remembrance, Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari on Sunday lauded the nation’s armed forces and law enforcement agencies for their unprecedented sacrifices during the annual Pakistan Day celebrations. The occasion, commemorating both the historic Lahore Resolution of 1940 and the adoption of Pakistan’s first Constitution in 1956, was observed with a grand military parade at Aiwan-i-Sadr in Islamabad.
President Zardari, addressing the gathered dignitaries—including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, top military brass, and members of the diplomatic corps—stressed that the country’s brave armed forces remain ever-ready to make any sacrifice in the face of geo-political challenges. “Pakistan is facing geo-political challenges, while their brave armed forces, with the support of the nation, have been giving unprecedented sacrifices,” he stated. He further noted that while external forces, such as India, and terrorist outfits like the Khawarij seek to undermine Pakistan, the unity of the nation and its military resolve would counter any nefarious designs.
Highlighting modern challenges, the president pointed out that the evolution of fifth-generation warfare has added layers of complexity to national security. He underscored the importance of strengthening defence capabilities alongside boosting key economic sectors such as agriculture. Emphasizing the significance of investing in the youth, Zardari described them as an “asset of the nation,” urging the government to equip them with research-based education and advanced technological training.
In his remarks, President Zardari also reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to a balanced foreign policy, one that promotes stability and peace while fostering strong ties with neighboring countries and the international community. The president extended his solidarity to the Kashmiri people, condemning Indian actions in the disputed region and vowing to continue advocating for their right to self-determination at global forums.
The military parade itself was a display of both ceremonial tradition and modern aerial prowess. The national event commenced with the playing of the national anthem and featured an impressive fly-past by the Pakistan Air Force’s fighter jets, including the renowned Karakoram-8 (K-8) aircraft, which executed a series of aerobatic manoeuvres over the President’s House.
In his earlier national address, President Zardari had called upon all Pakistanis to rise above internal divisions and negativity, appealing for unity in the pursuit of a prosperous, inclusive, and just Pakistan. His message resonated with themes of resilience and the enduring spirit of the nation—a spirit that, he believed, had been the foundation of Pakistan’s past and would shape its future.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in a subsequent message, echoed these sentiments. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar added his tribute by honouring the sacrifices of Pakistan’s forebears and the ongoing struggle of the Kashmiri people. “Pakistan is the identity we have forged through tremendous sacrifices. United as one nation, we vow to defend and safeguard it,” he declared, calling on Pakistanis everywhere to excel and bring honor to the nation.
The day’s celebrations were further accentuated by messages from the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and other senior military officials. In a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the armed forces recalled March 23, 1940 as a defining moment in Pakistan’s history, reiterating their unwavering commitment to protecting the nation’s sovereignty and fostering democratic progress. They pledged to continue upholding the peace and stability that have long been the hallmarks of Pakistan, closing their message with a resounding “Pakistan Armed Forces Zindabad” and “Pakistan Paindabad.”
As the celebrations continued, President Zardari prepared to present national awards to recognize the excellence, service, and sacrifices of over a hundred Pakistanis and foreigners, further cementing the day’s dual message of gratitude for past sacrifices and hope for a resilient future.
