ISLAMABAD – Pakistan’s Foreign Office (FO) announced on Sunday that Pakistan and Armenia have formally established diplomatic relations, marking a significant shift in regional geopolitics.
Until now, the two countries had no formal ties, with relations shaped largely by Pakistan’s consistent support for Azerbaijan in its decades-long conflict with Armenia over Nagorno-Karabakh.
The breakthrough came after a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia earlier this month. Following the deal, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar held a phone conversation with Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, during which both sides agreed to consider opening diplomatic channels.
According to the FO, the two countries officially established relations by exchanging a joint communiqué in Tianjin, on the sidelines of the ongoing Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.
“Marking a historic step forward, both the leaders affirmed their commitment to the principles and objectives of the United Nations Charter and discussed possible avenues of cooperation, including economy, education, culture, and tourism,” the FO statement read.
The two leaders also reaffirmed their intent to cooperate at bilateral and multilateral forums to achieve shared goals of peace, progress, and prosperity.
Dar later posted on X (formerly Twitter), expressing his satisfaction at signing the joint communiqué with Mirzoyan and sharing photos of the signing ceremony, with the ministers seated against the backdrop of their national flags.
Mirzoyan, in a statement on X, called the move a “major step” and voiced Armenia’s readiness to foster constructive engagement and mutually beneficial cooperation in line with the UN Charter.
Earlier this month, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump’s role in brokering the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace deal at the White House Summit.
“Pakistan has always stood by the brotherly nation of Azerbaijan and we stand with them at this proud moment of their history,” the premier wrote on X, congratulating both countries on “charting a course for a peaceful future for their region.”
The establishment of diplomatic ties between Islamabad and Yerevan marks the beginning of a new chapter in Pakistan’s foreign relations, potentially opening doors for collaboration in diverse fields beyond traditional geopolitical alignments.
