Budapest, Hungary – Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has intensified his criticism of the European Union, pledging to eliminate foreign influence within Hungary and accusing Brussels of attempting to undermine the country’s sovereignty. In a speech delivered on Saturday, Orbán likened the EU to historical imperial powers that sought to dominate Hungary.
“There is always an empire that is trying to take away the freedom of the Hungarians, and right now it is the one in Brussels,” Orbán declared. He accused the EU of abusing its power, comparing its influence to that of the former Habsburg rulers.
Crackdown on Foreign-Backed Organizations
Orbán announced his government’s plans to dismantle what he called a “shadow army” of foreign-backed media outlets, NGOs, and political activists. “After today’s festive gathering comes the Easter cleaning. The bugs have overwintered,” he stated, vowing to eliminate organizations receiving international funding, including those backed by the United States.
The prime minister has long been a critic of Western liberalism, often targeting civil society groups that receive funding from entities such as the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). He accused these organizations of attempting to destabilize his government and promised that they would face “legal consequences.”
EU and Ukraine: A Contentious Issue
Orbán reiterated his opposition to EU support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, claiming that Brussels’ involvement is a form of neocolonialism. “Brussels has jumped headlong into the Russian-Ukrainian war,” he said.
The Hungarian leader opposed Ukraine’s EU membership bid, declaring, “There is only one answer: European Union, but without Ukraine.”
Constitutional Amendments and National Security Measures
In line with his broader nationalist agenda, Orbán’s ruling Fidesz party has proposed constitutional amendments that would allow the government to suspend the citizenship of dual nationals deemed a threat to Hungary’s sovereignty. This move has raised concerns among civil rights groups, who see it as an attempt to further consolidate power.
Echoing the ‘Great Replacement’ Theory
In his speech, Orbán also invoked the controversial “great replacement theory,” a conspiracy theory suggesting that Western nations are being deliberately overrun by foreign populations. “The battle today is actually being fought for the soul of the Western world,” he claimed. “The empire wants to mix and then replace the indigenous people of Europe with invading masses arriving from foreign civilizations.”
With Hungary set to hold elections in the coming years, Orbán’s latest remarks indicate that his government will continue its hardline stance against the EU and foreign influence, positioning itself as a defender of national sovereignty.
