Rome: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has reaffirmed that Italy has no intention of sending troops to Ukraine, following a virtual summit hosted by Britain aimed at garnering support to safeguard any potential ceasefire.
“National participation in a possible military force on the ground is not envisaged,” the Italian government said in a statement on Saturday.
Meloni participated in a video conference convened by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, where leaders discussed commitments to ensuring a “just and lasting peace” while securing Ukraine’s sovereignty and stability.
“The Prime Minister confirmed that Italy intends to continue working with European and Western partners, as well as the United States, to define credible and effective security guarantees. However, Italy’s participation in a possible military force on the ground is not planned,” the statement emphasized.
This reaffirmation aligns with Italy’s broader strategy of diplomatic and material support for Ukraine while refraining from direct military involvement. The discussions among Western allies underscore the continued efforts to ensure Ukraine’s security amid ongoing tensions with Russia.
