In a heartfelt video address to Italian American citizens, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni emphasized the deep, unbreakable bond between Italy and the United States while calling for a measured response to the unfolding tariff dispute between the EU and the US. Speaking with emotion, Meloni expressed profound gratitude for the Italian-American community’s contributions to America’s prosperity and celebrated their role as ambassadors of Italian passion, creativity, and genius.
Amid rising tensions triggered by sweeping tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump—a 25% levy on car imports and a staggering 200% tariff on champagne, wine, and other alcoholic beverages—the prime minister underscored the importance of transatlantic unity. “It is my responsibility to defend transatlantic unity and to rebuild it if necessary,” Meloni declared. She stressed that while differences over tariffs are evident, the response must be reasoned rather than impulsive.
Addressing a meeting with the centrist opposition Azione party, Meloni highlighted that just over 10% of Italian exports, primarily machinery and related components, go to the US—a testament to the significant economic ties between the two nations. Emanuele Orsini, head of the Italian business federation Confindustria, echoed her concerns, warning that a trade war would pose severe challenges for Italy. He expressed hope that the EU could engage in negotiations to avert such a scenario.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Meloni reinforced her long-held view that the US is Italy’s “first ally” and firmly rejected any notion that Italy must choose between Europe and the United States. Reflecting on US Vice President JD Vance’s criticisms regarding Europe’s commitment to free speech and democracy, she acknowledged, “I have to say I agree… I’ve been saying this for years … Europe has a bit lost itself.” While these comments have stirred debate, Meloni remains committed to boosting Europe’s defence capabilities in response to shifting transatlantic dynamics, even as she rules out deploying troops to enforce a peace settlement in Ukraine.
Prime Minister Meloni’s call for a reasoned approach and her heartfelt appeal to the Italian American community underscore her dedication to safeguarding both Italy’s national interests and the broader transatlantic alliance.
