Israel Eliminates Key Hamas Spokesman and Yemen’s Prime Minister in Coordinated Strikes
Abu Obeida, iconic masked spokesman for Hamas military wing, killed in Gaza City airstrike as Israel prepares major offensive on Palestinian capital
Hamas Leadership Decimated
Israel has successfully eliminated Abu Obeida, the longtime and iconic spokesman for Hamas’s armed wing, in a precision airstrike on Gaza City, according to Israel’s Defense Minister announced Sunday. The operation comes as Israeli military forces prepare for a major offensive on the Palestinian capital, where intelligence suggests other senior Hamas leaders remain in hiding.
The elimination represents a significant blow to Hamas’s remaining command structure in Gaza. Since the conflict began following the Hamas-led attacks of October 7, 2023, Israel has systematically targeted and eliminated nearly the entire local leadership of the organization, including the assassination of top leader Yahya Sinwar.
Yemen’s Leadership Targeted
In a parallel development, Yemen’s Houthi rebels confirmed Saturday that their Prime Minister Ahmed Ghaleb Nasser Al-Rahawi was killed in an Israeli airstrike, marking the most senior Yemeni official to die in the expanding regional conflict.
The targeted strike occurred in Sana’a as the rebel-controlled television network was broadcasting a prerecorded speech by Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, the secretive leader of the Iran-backed rebel group. Senior Houthi officials had gathered to watch the address, which included updates on Gaza developments and vows of retaliation against Israel.
According to tribal leaders who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity, the strike targeted a meeting of Houthi leaders in a villa in Beit Baws, an ancient village in southern Sana’a.
Regional Escalation
The coordinated strikes represent a significant escalation in Israel’s campaign against Iran-backed proxy groups across the region. Israeli forces had previously targeted Houthi infrastructure, including oil facilities and power plants controlled by the rebels in Sana’a.
The Israeli military confirmed Friday that the Sana’a airstrike had specifically targeted the Iran-aligned group’s chief of staff, defense minister, and other senior officials, with verification of additional casualties still ongoing.
“This is only the beginning,” Israel’s defense minister said, vowing continued operations against Iran‑aligned groups.
The internationally recognized Government of Yemen is based in Aden; the Houthi administration in Sanaa is not widely recognized.
Context & Background
- Israel launched intensified strikes around Gaza City amid warnings of a broader ground operation aimed at dismantling remaining Hamas networks.
- Houthi forces have launched missiles and drones toward Israel and Red Sea shipping during the Gaza war, aligning themselves rhetorically with Hamas.
