Budapest, Hungary – Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó, has declared a “new era” in U.S.-Hungarian relations, emphasizing mutual respect and cooperation in economic, investment, and energy sectors.
In a statement, Szijjártó highlighted the commitment of U.S. President Donald Trump to peace, particularly in relation to the war in Ukraine. He asserted that if Trump does not broker peace, no one will, and criticized the European Union for obstructing these efforts.
“Hungary supports the efforts of Donald Trump by all means, and we find it outrageous that Brussels is preventing their success,” Szijjártó stated.
The Hungarian minister also revealed details of his meeting with U.S. prosecutor Robert Palladino, noting that diplomatic ties with the American Embassy in Budapest have been restored to a foundation of mutual respect.
Hungary Backs U.S.-Russia Talks for Stability
In a separate social media post, Szijjártó reaffirmed Hungary’s historical stance on East-West relations, stressing that cooperation is beneficial, while hostility between the two blocs is damaging to Hungary’s interests.
“We know from our historical experience that civilized East-West cooperation is good for us, and East-West hostility is bad. That’s why we support the U.S.-Russia negotiations,” he said.
According to Szijjártó, these ongoing diplomatic discussions have already made the world a safer place by reducing the risk of further escalation in global conflicts.
Hungary also reaffirmed its support for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCEZ) as the last remaining platform for East-West dialogue, underscoring the necessity of preserving and strengthening its functions.
As part of its diplomatic initiatives, Hungary welcomed the new Secretary General of the OSCEZ, Feridun Sinirlioğlu, to Budapest, signaling its commitment to maintaining international cooperation.
Strengthening Hungary-U.S. Relations
Szijjártó’s remarks reflect Hungary’s strategic pivot towards stronger ties with Washington under the new U.S. administration while maintaining its independent stance within the European Union. With Hungary aligning itself with Trump’s peace-oriented foreign policy, Budapest is positioning itself as a key player in transatlantic diplomacy.
