Budapest, May 1, 2025 – April proved to be a whirlwind of activity for Tristan Azbej, State Secretary for the Aid of Persecuted Christians and head of the Hungary Helps Program, as he visited four countries in one month—Nigeria, Pakistan, Iraq, and Jordan—to support vulnerable Christian communities.
“One month—four countries—countless fates,” Azbej reflected in a recent social media post. “Our mission remains unchanged since the Hungarian government first established our state secretariat in 2016: to provide real help to persecuted and disadvantaged Christian communities around the world. Yet our determination grows stronger every day.”
Key Highlights from April’s Mission
- Nigeria 🇳🇬
Northern Nigerian Christians continue to face severe violence. Azbej oversaw new rounds of humanitarian aid, supplying food, medical assistance, and shelter to those impacted by extremist attacks. - Pakistan 🇵🇰
In Lahore and Jaranwala, Azbej met survivors of a 2023 pogrom against Christians. He launched a vocational training program to equip young believers with skills for sustainable livelihoods. - Iraq & Jordan 🇮🇶🇯🇴
Dialogues with local church leaders and bishops focused on bolstering community resilience. Discussions included rebuilding schools and community centers damaged by conflict and supporting interfaith initiatives to foster religious tolerance.
Growing Dedication to Christian Solidarity
Azbej emphasized that these efforts go beyond immediate relief. “We work in the name of Christian solidarity and humane migration prevention,” he stated, noting that empowering communities locally reduces the pressures driving forced migration.
As April’s intensive travel concluded, the State Secretary looked ahead to a period of reflection: “The next few days off will be about processing, evaluating, and recharging from what happened. Have a good rest!”
