In response to one of the worst natural disasters of the last century, the Hungarian government has stepped forward to support Myanmar, which was struck by a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake last week. With the tragedy claiming more than 1,700 lives, injuring nearly 3,400 people, and leaving 300 individuals missing—with numbers expected to rise—rescue teams continue to search for survivors amid collapsed buildings.
The ongoing civil war and crumbling infrastructure, including damaged roads, bridges, and hospitals, have compounded the difficulties of rescue operations and humanitarian assistance. Acknowledging the urgent need for both basic necessities and renewed hope, Tristan Azbej, State Secretary for the Aid of Persecuted Christians and head of the Hungary Helps Program, announced that the Hungarian government is providing humanitarian aid worth 5 million HUF.
Under the Hungary Helps – Magyarország Segít program, the grant has been allocated to Catholic Charities. By working through its local Catholic partner, the organization is able to deliver vital food, water, medical care, and other essential supplies directly to those most in need.
Emphasizing Hungary’s commitment to Christian values and humanity, Azbej stated, “The people of Myanmar now need not only food, water and medical care, but also hope and solidarity. Hungary stands by those in trouble even in this difficult moment.”
