In a recent Facebook post, Tristan Azbej, State Secretary for the Aid of Persecuted Christians and head of the Hungary Helps Program, announced a significant boost to their humanitarian efforts in Nigeria. Azbej expressed his excitement over the arrival of his friend, Member of the European Parliament Hölvény György, who also serves as the good service ambassador of the Hungary Helps – Magyarország Segít Program.
This reinforcement came at a crucial time. The team’s first trip took them to Abuja, where they visited an internal refugee camp. Here, they met with people fleeing Borno state amid violent attacks by Boko Haram—an area the team had personally visited just two days earlier. In the camp, refugees are searching for safety, shelter, and a renewed hope for life after enduring traumatic experiences.
Azbej described the visit as both shocking and inspiring. “It was shocking to see the circumstances in which they were living – but perhaps an even stronger experience to witness the hope reflected in their eyes,” he shared. The smiles of the children and the resilient spirit of the community served as a powerful reminder that even in the most difficult situations, life always finds a way.

The arrival of Hölvény György has further strengthened the mission’s capacity to provide essential humanitarian aid. His prompt involvement on the ground underscores the commitment of both the Hungary Helps Program and the broader international community to support those affected by violence and displacement in Nigeria.
This collaborative effort is a clear testament to the ongoing dedication of Hungary towards delivering hope, safety, and dignity to the most vulnerable populations. As the mission continues, the team remains focused on ensuring that help reaches those who need it most—providing not only food and shelter but also the promise of a brighter future.
Member of the European Parliament Hölvény György has expressed his wholehearted support for the Hungary Helps mission in Nigeria in a recent Facebook post. He shared,
“🇳🇬 Already in Nigeria, where I joined Hungary Helps – Magyarország Segít Secretary of State, my friend and the Azbej Tristan team: our first joint trip led to a camp helping internal refugees near Abuja.
👉🏻 Nigeria is one of Africa’s giants: in the country with a population of more than two hundred million, the number of internal refugees could reach nearly two and a half million. People fleeing conflicts, violence, persecution.
👉🏻 It is truer than anything else here that we learn from each other. Let’s see that ❗️”
This statement reinforces the collaborative spirit and commitment of both Hungarian and Nigerian partners in addressing the humanitarian crises in Nigeria. As part of the ongoing mission, the joint team visited an internal refugee camp near Abuja where they provided vital food donations and other forms of assistance to those displaced by ongoing conflicts and natural disasters.

The Hungary Helps Program, led by Tristan Azbej, remains dedicated to delivering crucial support to vulnerable communities facing severe challenges. Hölvény György’s message echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of unity, learning from one another, and providing hope amid adversity.
This collaboration not only strengthens the humanitarian efforts on the ground but also highlights the shared commitment to fostering long-term development and resilience among affected communities. Together, Hungarian and Nigerian leaders are working to build a future where help reaches those who need it most, and where mutual support transcends borders.
