Hölvényi György, EP Permanent Rapporteur for Education and the good service ambassador for Hungary Helps – Magyarország segít, recently shared on his Facebook post the emotional highs and lows of an important humanitarian mission in Makurdu, Nigeria. His update highlights both the soul-lifting successes and the heartbreaking challenges encountered during the mission.
A Dual Experience of Hope and Heartbreak
During his week-long mission, Hölvényi György joined the Hungary Helps team as they visited several sites where the Hungarian government, in partnership with local churches, is actively supporting educational and social institutions. In Nigeria, the Catholic Church plays a crucial role by providing education to nearly one million students—a testament to the power of faith-based community support.
Confronting Educational Challenges in Africa
Hölvényi György raised urgent concerns regarding the state of education in Nigeria, one of Africa’s giants. He noted that forty percent of primary school-age children in Nigeria drop out of school. With an alarming ratio of forty-six students per teacher, the current challenges are only expected to worsen amid rapid demographic growth.
“The future of Africa already lies in education!” he declared. He stressed that qualified youth are vital for the economic and social development of nations. To prevent mass migration and to build sustainable growth, it is essential that young people see opportunities in their own country through robust education and vocational training programs.

A Glimpse of Life in Makurdu
Hölvényi György shared a poignant moment from the mission with a photo of Matthew and his son Martin. The picture, taken at the Mbawa camp—a facility that has been helping Christian internal refugees for five years—captures the resilience of the human spirit amid adversity. The image of the foil barracks in the background stands as a silent witness to the ongoing struggle and hope that permeates the region.
Looking Forward
This humanitarian mission in Makurdu, Nigeria, reinforces the critical need for continued support and investment in education across Africa. As Hölvényi György and the Hungary Helps team continue their work, they remain dedicated to transforming lives through educational empowerment and humanitarian aid.
Stay tuned for more updates on this mission and other efforts aimed at creating lasting change in Nigeria and beyond.
