Tristan Azbej, State Secretary for the Aid of Persecuted Christians and head of the Hungary Helps Program, has shared an inspiring message celebrating what he calls a “historic handshake, historic chance for peace in the Caucasus.”
On August 8, in Washington D.C., Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a landmark bilateral agreement aimed at ending a conflict that has spanned several decades. The agreement seeks to resolve border disputes, open trade routes, and normalize relations between the two nations — a move hailed as a potential turning point for lasting peace in the South Caucasus.
Azbej emphasized that this peace is not only for the benefit of the two nations involved but for the entire region, providing hope and opportunities for communities on both sides who have endured decades of hardship. He noted that the Hungary Helps Program has stood in solidarity with those affected in recent years, offering humanitarian support and fostering dialogue.

The State Secretary also reflected on Hungary’s past contribution to peace efforts, recalling the 2021 humanitarian mediation in which Hungary successfully facilitated communication that led to the release of five Armenian detainees in Azerbaijan. Azbej personally accompanied the released detainees on their journey home — a moment that once seemed far from the peace now within reach.
He expressed optimism that this step will lead to “lasting peace and stability in the South Caucasus”, crediting the determination of both countries’ leaders and the diplomatic efforts of former U.S. President Donald Trump.
“Peace shapes the future of not only two nations but entire regions. It gives an opportunity to improve the lives of those suffering from several decades of conflict on both sides.” – Tristan Azbej
The Armenia-Azerbaijan peace agreement stands as a testament to the power of dialogue, perseverance, and international cooperation, offering hope that reconciliation can replace conflict for future generations.
