Right-wing youth activist and influencer Charlie Kirk, a major ally of President Donald Trump, was shot dead September 10 in a "political assassination" that sparked fears of more political violence in an increasingly febrile United States. 🚨 MANHUNT UNDERWAY
FBI and local authorities continue searching for the gunman who shot Kirk from a nearby rooftop. The weapon, described as a “high-powered, bolt action rifle,” has been recovered. Officials report they have “good video” of the suspect, described as college-aged and male.
Kirk, only 31 years old, had become one of the most recognizable voices among America’s youth, championing free speech, limited government, and Christian values on campuses nationwide. His sudden death has left allies reeling, with tributes pouring in from across the political and faith spectrum.
The shooting occurred during Kirk’s “American Comeback Tour” event, where he was conducting one of his signature “Prove Me Wrong” debates with students. Video footage shows Kirk responding to a question about mass shootings when he suddenly clutched his neck and collapsed as a gunshot was heard.
More than politics, Kirk was open about his faith in Jesus Christ, often testifying that his Christian convictions were at the center of his mission to equip young Americans with truth and courage. He frequently encouraged students not only to defend their freedoms but also to stand boldly for their faith in the public square.
President Donald Trump called Kirk “Great, and even Legendary,” noting, “No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us.”
Trump extended personal condolences to Kirk’s family: “Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!” In a final gesture of honor, President Trump ordered that all American flags across the United States be lowered to half-staff until Sunday evening at 6 P.M.
The president also blamed “radical Left” rhetoric for contributing to political violence, stating: “For years, those on the radical Left have compared wonderful Americans like Charlie to Nazis and the world’s worst mass murderers and criminals. This kind of rhetoric is directly responsible for the terrorism that we’re seeing in our country today.”
Political and Faith Leaders React
“Charlie Kirk was a true friend. The kind of guy you could say something to and know it would always stay with him. God didn’t answer those prayers, and that’s OK. He had other plans. You ran a good race, my friend. We’ve got it from here.”
“This is a dark day for our state. It’s a tragic day for our nation. I want to be very clear, this is a political assassination.”
Led congressmen in a moment of silence to honor Kirk, though Democrats reportedly rejected calls for prayer.
“The assassination of Charlie, as he peacefully engaged in dialogue on a university campus, has stunned millions of Americans across the political spectrum. We must recognize that while our earthly battles are waged in political and cultural arenas, their roots are spiritual.”
Kirk’s killing comes as the Jewish and broader philanthropic communities are growing increasingly concerned about the threats posed by polarization and extremism. Though no suspect has been arrested and law enforcement has yet to comment on the motive of the shooter, the deadly attack was widely seen as political in nature.
Progressive Jewish figures also denounced the killing, with Amy Spitalnick, CEO of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, calling political violence “among the most dire threats to our democracy and our safety” and warning that Kirk’s killing could be used to “pit communities against one another.”
In 2012, at the age of 18, Kirk founded Turning Point USA, a conservative activist and advocacy organization which mainly operates on high school, college, and university campuses. He served as Turning Point’s CEO from its founding until his death. He also founded Turning Point Action and Turning Point Faith and was, according to Trump, Vance, and numerous conservative activists, a key figure in securing Trump’s 2024 reelection.
Kirk is survived by his wife, Erika Frantzve, a former Miss Arizona USA and Christian entrepreneur, and their two young children — a daughter born in 2022 and a son born in 2024.
