Christian Youth Faces False Blasphemy Accusation in Lahore
In a troubling incident in Lahore district, a young Christian, 21-year-old Maan Masih, has been falsely accused of blasphemy, sparking concerns among the Christian minority community in Pakistan.
The incident occurred during preparations for the celebration of 12 Rabi-ul-Awwal, a significant date marking the birth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), known as Mawlid un-Nabi or Eid Milad un-Nabi. This day is widely celebrated by Muslims with festivities, prayers, charity, and reflection on the Prophet’s life and teachings. In many Muslim-majority countries, it is recognized as a national holiday.
According to the First Information Report (FIR) filed by Shafiq Ahmed, Maan Masih allegedly entered a street where Muslim residents were decorating for the occasion and tore down banners inscribed with the name of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) or words celebrating his birth. However, the accusations have been contested by Masih’s family and human rights advocates.
A legal team from the Humanitarian Action for Rights and Development Society (HARDS) visited the scene and met with Masih’s family, who insisted that the accusations were baseless and motivated by his Christian faith. The team is now working to support Masih, who remains in police custody while fighting for justice and protection.
Human rights activist Napoleon Qayyum condemned the incident, stating that such false accusations create fear and insecurity among Christian minorities, further marginalizing their communities. “These incidents are not isolated and contribute to a climate of fear for religious minorities,” Qayyum said.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about the misuse of Pakistan’s blasphemy laws, which have been criticized for targeting religious minorities and settling personal disputes, as noted by organizations like Amnesty International.
As Maan Masih’s legal battle continues, advocates are calling for reforms to prevent the exploitation of blasphemy laws and to ensure justice and safety for all communities in Pakistan.
