Deal or No Deal? Trump Announces “Almost All Points of Agreement” With Iran and Orders 5-Day Pause on Power Plant Strikes
Twenty-three days into the war, President Trump announced productive backchannel talks with Iran, paused imminent strikes on Iranian power plants, and described “almost all points of agreement” — while CENTCOM Commander Cooper told Iranians to stay inside for now, promising a “clear signal” when it’s safe to come out. Iran denied everything.

In the most dramatic diplomatic pivot of the four-week conflict, President Trump announced Monday morning that the United States and Iran have been engaged in “very good and productive conversations” over the past two days toward “a complete and total resolution” of hostilities — and that, based on that progress, he has ordered the Department of War to stand down all planned strikes on Iranian power plants for five days. It is a pivot that came less than 48 hours after Trump threatened to obliterate Iran’s power grid if the Strait of Hormuz was not reopened.
The announcement sent immediate shockwaves through global markets: oil prices fell 9 to 13%, stock futures rallied more than 2%, and energy traders began pricing in a possible end to the Hormuz disruption that has pushed Brent crude above $120 a barrel. Iran denied every word of it.
On the Tarmac: Trump’s Sharpest Exchanges Yet
Speaking to reporters on the tarmac at Palm Beach International Airport before boarding Air Force One for Memphis, Trump was at his most candid — and most combative — of the entire war. When a reporter told him that Iranian state television was calling his claims about ongoing negotiations false, his response was instantaneous.
PRESIDENT TRUMP: “Well, they’re going to have to get themselves better public relations people!”
“We have had very, very strong talks. We’ll see where they lead. We have points, major points of agreement, I would say almost all points of agreement. Perhaps that hasn’t been conveyed.”
“The communication has been blown to pieces… but we’ve had very strong talks. Mr. Witkoff and Mr. Kushner had them.”
REPORTER: “Is that the Supreme Leader?”
@POTUS: “No.”
“We’re dealing with the man who, I believe, is the most respected and the ‘leader.’ It’s a little tough — we’ve wiped out everybody.”
Trump’s remark — “we’ve wiped out everybody” — is a remarkable encapsulation of the entire campaign in five words. The Supreme Leader is dead. The SNSC chief is dead. The intelligence minister is dead. The Basij commander is dead. The IRGC chief is dead. Somewhere in the wreckage of that leadership structure, an unnamed figure has survived and risen to a position of enough authority to conduct negotiations. Trump described him as “the most respected” remaining leader — and confirmed it is not the formally named Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, who has not been seen publicly since his appointment.
The Envoys: Witkoff and Kushner in the Room
Trump’s deployment of Witkoff and Kushner as his Iran interlocutors reflects his consistent preference for trusted personal envoys over formal diplomatic channels. Both men played roles in the Abraham Accords negotiations during Trump’s first term. Their involvement suggests the administration is treating the Iran talks as a major diplomatic opportunity, not merely a tactical pause. If a deal emerges from this five-day window, these two will be the architects.
CENTCOM to the Iranian People: “Stay Inside”
“You need to stay inside right now. There will be a clear signal at some point, as the President has indicated, for you to be able to come out.”
Admiral Cooper’s statement to Iranian civilians carries enormous weight. It is not a message to Iran’s government — it is a message to its people. “There will be a clear signal at some point for you to be able to come out” is language that implies the current danger is not yet over, but that there is a specific endpoint being worked toward. Read alongside Trump’s announcement of diplomatic progress, it suggests a coordinated message: the military operation is paused, talks are underway, and when it is safe, the Iranian people will be told. The phrase “as the President has indicated” explicitly links Cooper’s military message to Trump’s diplomatic one — a seamless coordination between the Pentagon and the White House on a single narrative arc.
Iran Denies Everything — and Markets Don’t Care
Iran’s denial is unsurprising and strategically rational — acknowledging talks would signal vulnerability and potentially fracture the regime’s internal cohesion at a moment of extreme weakness. But the markets delivered their own verdict: oil prices fell 9 to 13% within hours of Trump’s announcement. That is not the reaction of a world that believes Iran’s denial. Energy traders, who have skin in the game and no ideological stake in either side’s narrative, moved money on the assumption that a deal is possible.

before strikes resume
If the deal framework Trump described — U.S. possession of Iran’s enriched uranium, no further nuclear weapons development, no more proxy wars, and maximum oil flow through the Strait — comes to pass, it would represent the most complete geopolitical transformation of the Middle East in a generation. It would also vindicate every controversial decision made since February 28: the scale of the strikes, the costs, the casualties, the alliance frictions, and the risks. Twenty-three days of war for a generation of peace. That is the bet Trump is making in this five-day window.
The Iranian people are still inside. The talks are continuing. The window is five days. The world is watching.
