At Tuesday’s session of the European Parliament, MEPs raised serious concerns over the escalating violence against Christians in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In a powerful speech, KDNP MEP György Hölvényi condemned the ongoing attacks, pointing out that the problem is not new. He argued that the Kinshasa government has, for decades, failed to guarantee the safety of its citizens.
“The massacre in February, which claimed seventy lives, was the latest in a series of attacks by the Islamist group calling itself the Allied Protection Force. Islamic State news channels have been reporting for five years that Islamist militants are massacring Christians. What has the Congolese leadership done since then? How many more victims are needed?” Hölvényi asked during his address.
He highlighted that the February massacre, which targeted a Protestant church in eastern Congo, has pushed the violence against Christians to unprecedented levels. “If such an event occurs in a country, it cannot remain unanswered. It is a legitimate expectation that the Congolese government also makes efforts to suppress Islamist extremists. We expect a clear answer and decisive steps. We cannot let Congo suffer the same fate as the Sahel!” he stressed.
This debate comes at a critical time as human rights advocates and development policy experts demand stronger international measures and more robust local governance to protect vulnerable communities. The European Parliament’s discussion signals a renewed commitment to addressing the long-standing crisis, urging immediate and decisive action by the Congolese leadership.
As violence escalates, the call for international solidarity and effective intervention becomes even more pressing. The European Parliament is now closely monitoring the situation, pushing for a comprehensive approach to combat extremist violence and secure the rights and lives of Christians in Congo.
