Budapest, Hungary – Former U.S. Deputy Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism, Ellie Cohanim, recently took to social media to share her overwhelmingly positive experience in Hungary. During her visit, Cohanim met with multiple leaders of the local Jewish community, all of whom confirmed that Hungary stands out in Europe as a bastion of safety and security for its Jewish citizens.
Cohanim recounted her inspiring encounters in Budapest, emphasizing that the thriving Jewish community in Hungary is a direct result of the policies implemented by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and his government. “Hungary is now a unique country in all of Europe because Jews there have safety & security,” she stated, noting that the nation’s rejection of the European Union’s migration policies – which she has described as “suicidal” – has played a crucial role in safeguarding the community.

On Shabbat, Cohanim had the honor of joining Rabbi Slomó Köves at the historic Óbudai Zsinagóga. The intimate fireside chat, though not photographed due to observance of Shabbat traditions, covered a range of topics from American Jewry to global antisemitism. Cohanim also shared her personal journey as an Iranian Jew who escaped the 1979 Revolution, adding a deeply personal layer to her narrative.
In addition to these engaging discussions, the delegation met with Mr. Andor Grósz, President of the Federation of Hungarian Jewish Communities (MAZSIHISZ) and Vice President of the World Jewish Congress. These meetings underscored the strong ties between Hungarian Jewish leadership and international bodies.
Expressing her gratitude, Cohanim extended a heartfelt thank you to Hungary’s leading conservative think tank, Alapjogokért Központ, for inviting her delegation to the “Peace Through Strength: The World Aligns With Trump and Hungary” conference in Budapest. The event brought together conservative thought leaders and policymakers, focusing on security, sovereignty, and international alliances. Throughout her address, Cohanim commended Prime Minister Orbán for his resolute policies, asserting that Hungary’s approach offers a model for ensuring the safety and prosperity of Jewish communities.
