Rome, March 2025 – Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has firmly rejected the oversimplified choice between Trump and Europe, embracing a nuanced approach that champions the bridging of transatlantic divides. In a recent interview with the Financial Times, Meloni responded affirmatively to United States Vice President JD Vance’s pointed criticisms of Europe, highlighting that the blame for Europe’s current challenges lies with its ruling class rather than its people.
“I have to say I agree,” Meloni stated when asked about Vance’s claim that Europe has backslided on its commitment to freedom of speech and democracy. “I’ve been saying this for years… Europe has a bit lost itself.” By acknowledging these criticisms, the premier underscored her belief that European leaders must confront internal issues—such as mass immigration and a disconnect with the everyday citizen—instead of succumbing to external pressures from powers like Russia or China.
While some might view Vance’s assertions as divisive, Meloni sees them as an opportunity to reset transatlantic priorities. “The US President Donald Trump’s criticism of the EU was not directed at its people, but at its ruling class… and the idea that instead of reading reality and finding ways to give answers to people, you can impose your ideology on people,” she explained. In doing so, Meloni reiterates her stance that pragmatic solutions and mutual respect should replace ideological confrontations.
Beyond critiquing internal European dynamics, Meloni stressed that Italy has no intention of choosing sides between the United States and Europe. “Italy can have good relations with the United States and, if there is something that Italy also can do to avoid confrontation with Europe and to build bridges, I will do that — and it is in the interest of the Europeans,” she affirmed. With the ongoing challenges of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and simmering transatlantic tensions, her message is clear: a united, cooperative approach benefits everyone.
By positioning Rome as a mediator capable of engaging constructively with both sides, Meloni has not only maintained her commitment to European solidarity but has also reinforced Italy’s role as a vital bridge in transatlantic relations. Her proactive stance and willingness to address complex issues head-on signal a forward-thinking leadership that values both national interests and global cooperation.
